Re: censorship?

My well though out, conscientious comments in the previous deleted thread solicited the above response in PM.

I will repeat the condensed form here.

From Censorship on Wikipedia:

Clearly there is a lot of censoring going on here lately! Now for to the constructive part (lest I be off-topic!): continual censorship against the wishes of the majority of the frequenters here will lead to the decline of this forum, slowly but steadily.

Free Parking is a positive outlet for the most part, keeping random stuff from degrading the usefullness of the other forums, making the forum more efficient and easy to use overall.

Oh, and I vote a big  for bringing back the Free Parking, just in case there is any confusion!

Not that my "vote" matters for diddly, since this is not a democracy.

If this is not a democracy then why did MC start this thread for feedback?
I hope f/p will return because when the usual players run off I will to, I come to know quite a few people on here. Make the rules well known and reinstate free parking.

Remember that the whole censorship deal doesn't apply here, or on any other web board for that matter. If we were standing around on a public street corner it would be one thing, but we're guests of the owners of this website and they can dictate any rules they want. Think of it as though we were sitting in their living room.

Another vote to bring back free parking, where else would we be able to put all non garage related questions or opinions ? I myself enjoy that spot. Just make new rules, and I believe politics and religion should be left for other forums, I sure dont discuss any of the above in my shop or garage.

I spend more time on this site than I do on any other, and taking away free parking section is just wrong IMHO

I appreciate everyone's constructive criticism and feedback on this debate.

I've truly listened to you and realized that Free Parking is something a lot of you miss. So, I'm bringing it back.

There will be a sticky at the top of the section clearly stating the restrictions. Our fathers taught us that you don't discuss politics, *** or religion in polite company. We believe that's a good rule to live by so that's what we're going to do here.

Look for it to be back this evening.

And tatra, no need to send chocolate but a stiff drink would be much appreciated!

I think Free Parking should be brought back. It served a useful purpose!

My perception was the small amount of political and religious postings never hurt anything. In fact I would have welcomed knowing about the garages and workshops of the presidential and VP candidates.

I fully recognize I'm a Guest in this website and the owners and moderators set the rules. There were many very useful topics developed in Free Parking. They should be continued. The go-nowhere topics should be cleaned up or cleaned out frequently.

There was a saying that went something like: "If you have nothing to say, say nothing!" It wouldn't hurt if that were adapted to the Internet by its users!

I am in favor of bringing the free parking section back. While the political threads were pretty numerous before the election, for the most part I avoided clicking on anything I thought wouldn't be of interest or would be offensive. Now that the election is FINALLLLY over, this should self correct. I enjoyed the post a picture of yourself/kids, what do you do for a living type threads. Reading posts from someone over time you tend to form a mental picture of them kind of like back in the 70's when CB radio was popular, it was interesting to see how different they actually are from what I'd pictured. The free parking section was usually the second or third place I went, spending most of my time on the garage, tools, & free parking sections with an occasional look at a couple of others. For me, free parking was a place to get to know others on the forum along with their other interests and provided an alternative to snapon vs craftsman, ebay, & other repetitive topics.

Thank You:thumbup: I also believe that is a good rule to live by & think others will do accordingly. Not much of a stiff drink but here's

It's not really back. A new Free Parking with restrictions will soon be available.

If you do a google search, there are plenty of places for you to talk politics and religion around the internet. Good luck with your hunt.

Ryan & MC,

Thank you both so much for providing this place. I had no idea what you guys were dealing with until I read some of these posts. The sense of entitlement by some is really amazing when considering the cost of this forum - FREE.

In the end, I think having an off topic forum is great simply to keep some of these people out of the forums that have real importance.

I'm truly amazed at what you guys have to put up with, but am so thankful that you do it. This forum has just helped me so much through the years.

Thanks again!

It's hard to call passionate users a bad thing... A lot of these guys care about this place a ton - and that's awesome actually.

Of course, one or two take it a wee bit far... but you always have a few of those.

All that said, if there is one thing I've learned from running forums 10 times larger than this one it's that 99% of the people in the world are pretty damn good folks...

It was all the threads about Obama that ruined it for all of us. And whoever started those threads was dumb enough to put "Obama" right in the thread title. :rolleyes2

Who said I wanted to talk politics or religon? I was just clarifying the fact that the old Free Parking was dead and gone and that a new one with restrictions was being started. Didn't want people to think they could go back to posting what ever they wanted.

Thank you MC for bringing "free parking' back soon!
I for one was not phased much by the political and religious views expressed... just something to skip over. I know my views on the two subjects and have never felt the need to cram them down someones throat via argument. I am even less likely to be swayed in my beliefs by reading something on the subjects in an internet forum about garages!
I was however somewhat taken aback by tossing '***' in with the other two! Do you really expect a bunch of hooligan boys like this to never bring up the subject of ***? There are but a few things that get this boys attention- Nice cars, nice garages, nice tools and nice look' n girls... OH and Beer!. I enjoy these things in random order with the attention span measured in minutes- like most boys. "Free parking" has provided this- in random order with short attention span enabled.
My 2 cents.

Not allowing one to express his/her freedom of speech or religion is a violation of rights. The free parking forum should be allowed and if a thread simply gets out of hand where FORUM RULES are broken, simply shut it down and bann the member if it warrants it. Not a big deal.

Man I totally disagree with that! You have the right to free speech in the middle of Fulton Mall downtown Fresno, but this is a privately owned board by Marcie and Ryan!

And I don't want them to have to moderate a high maintenance board that's full of politics and religion; they shouldn't have to work that hard on their own board.

As a staff member on another forum I can assure you its a misconception that there are rights to free speech on a private forum.....when you register you are agreeing to abide by the site Terms of service and that is that. I don't think the owners here are interested in telling anyone in what to think on these taboo subjects and they are not interested in hearing it from any of us on the forum they provide.

Thanks for bringing back free parking.

HERE, HERE. I fully agree with Merkeve 4 this is about garages and what we do with them the only politics should be what is relevant to the garage. Council regs etc. Nothing more.

Oh there was another thread about the Free Parking. Was it deleted ?
We are just guests of Marcie and Ryan. Please bring back Free parking but set us some guidelines to what we can post. It should be Garage related in some way.

I agree, but I don't think the forum rules specifically say no politic discussion allowed. I didn't read them because most forum rules are the same. No disrespecting other members, cursing, illicit photos, etc, etc. When these are broken moderators usually handle it as necessary.

Either way, I couldn't care less whether politic discussion is allowed. The OP asked opinions, I gave one.

Well maybe the rules should be changed

Deleted threads ( by Admin or Mods ) often offend a poster so best the rules say you can not post that type of information, then you are not offended.

Isn't that what the "General Garage Discussion" forum is for?

Well yes it is but free parking posts moved far to off topic.

People keep saying religious postings...I don't remember seeing any of those, just political ones, of which I was as guilty as anyone.

"Garages and workshops of the Pres. and VP candidates" Ha hahahahhaha! Are you kidding? Palin probably got her hands dirty on a snowmobile now and then, but the rest of them? :lol_hitti

Wait...am I violating the new rules?! :shocking:

As the other guys stated, there is a difference between free speech and shouting fire in a movie theater. It's their forum, they set the rules. Period.

Thanks for bringing Free Parking back. I'll keep my yapper in check.

A "Vote to Delete" function may help to ease administrative overhead and get rid of obviously offensive or tacky posts.

I have seen it used elsewhere and it works well: a certain (undisclosed) number of votes from members to delete a post will take care of any completely un-useful posts in short order.

The same can work in reverse to "Vote to Sticky" for especially useful/informative posts.

That's a good idea.
