Just curious guys, why was Free Parking removed from “The Garage Forum” section when not signed-in?

Why sorry ? Free Parking often gets full of rubbish and many join the forum just to post rubbish and spam. With it hidden from the public it is for members only.

I agree. No reason for it to be public...

It may also be an atttempt to knock down some of the Spam that we see daily.

About a month ago it seemed every morning I would have to skip the first 4-5 threads because they were spam. Seems to be working, I haven't reported one in a while.

There's probably more SPAM than what most guys see. Generally Ryan or one of the Mods see it and get it deleted quite promptly. It helps to have Mods/Admin in different time zones.

Essentially, it boils down to this:

I display Google adsense ads to people that are not logged in. Google sent a complaint that I was showing ads on pages with inappropriate content (the pinup thread mostly)... So, I had a decision to make - Get rid of the pinup threads or make the entire forum invisible to users that are not logged in.

So long as it doesn't cost me too much money, the pinup threads will stay...

Thanks Ryan for taking the time to explain/clarify the changes made to Free Parking.

It’s sad such a decision had to be made, but I’m sure most if not all agree with your choice.

No disrespect here, but just a thought, what if another forum was created and named something like “Members Only” that would contain the pinup thread and others with similar content. It could show-up on the forum listings with the rest, but when clicked on by non-members it would automatically default to the sign-up page. Wouldn’t this comply with Google AdSense and not disturb the original forum.

Again, just a thought.

Another good reason to make sure the Pin Up topic is kept decent.

Thank you Ryan, I have posted a quote of your reply here to that topic as a polite reminder.
Although I gather a couple of other topics may also be on that list.

I don't want to emphasize threads like the pin up thread. In any case, why is it important to have the Free Parking forum visible to folks not logged in?

Are there really any other pics that haven't already been posted? At least in kind? I like to look at pretty girls as much as the next guy but there's enough there for a lifetime. I'm just one voice but I wouldn't feel slighted if it was closed. If that turns out to be best for the GJ I think many would agree.

You will note Ryan stated 'emphasize' so you can see other topics like the WTF's would be part of that list as well. A massive clean up of Free Parking and another tightening of the forum rules to what is posted in Free Parking.

Not that it’s important so much, but for me personally prior to my joining, I often visited Free Parking and enjoyed the majority of what I read. Granted, it may not be for everybody, but like anything else we read, you take it with a grain of salt. I must admit, Free Parking is my go to forum when I need some amusement, laughter and just want to relax and read some interesting topics shared by the members. It has a way of pulling you in, getting you involved and sharing with others. It’s a positive thing, doesn’t always have to be about tools and such, just getting people involved and sharing an experience, that’s what makes it fun. Also, I have learned many things from this forum as well.

I think everyone here has ventured into the Free Parking zone at some point because seriously, there are times when nothing but tool talk can get a little boring.

To be honest, Free Parking had a positive influence on my signing-up to join and frankly I think many others as well.

So, the point I’m trying to make is, Free Parking is good to share with non-members. It lets people know GJ is a little more than just a tools/garage only related atmosphere and in my opinion, that’s a good thing.

Ryan I for one appreciate this thread. I also understand what you are doing and the effort it takes. I just wanted to say, thank you! James

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I enjoyed reading many threads on here without joining GJ. Because of this change, I imagine there will be a huge enrollment of new members.

Thanks to all those who provide advice for the new guys getting into the trades and giving sought after information.

Looking forward to enjoying many years of GJ now as a member.

Cheers

About 90% of members banned have posted something stupid or degrading in Free Parking. I recall going over a long ago removed topic and 4 posters banned from that had only ever posted to that bad topic meaning they never contributed in any way to what the forum is here for.

A recent banned member also kept starting a topic over every time it was deleted and never took the warnings. I believe what Ryan has done by making Free Parking Members only is good for the forum.

Agree 100%

Another thought....if a member posts something worthy of a time out (but not banning), maybe banning them from FP would be a good solution....assuming the violation took place in FP.

At present most of the moderators work to the 3 strikes rule. If you have had 3 warnings and keep posting the same thing then you are soon shown the door. You would be surprised how many violations take place in all areas of the forum. Arguments in the Classifieds often then move to PM's or other sections of the forum.

3 Strikes? Hmmmmm.....and I'm still around?

I think I have learned to just shut up and let the idiots continue to prove they are idiots.
