i could never get those screws to work. either they break off or the holes just strip... whenever i use those screws now, i drill bigger holes and insert plastic wall anchors so at least this way the screws can be removed and replaced as many times as needed. i cant even tell you how many times the screws would thread in 80% of the way, just to have the rest break off, forcing me to drill twice as many holes as needed just to mount somthing on a wall.

I agree with you some what, but I use them all the time here in South Florida. Used them installing all my windows and doors, used them installing my hurricane panel tracks, among other things. Once you've done a couple of hundred of them you get the hang of them. Main thing is clean out the holes after you drill them, all that dust in there will not let them sit all the way down, and that's when you'll snap the heads off.

good advice about cleaning out the holes, that is required! I used them on my basement in one room putting up firring strips. they worked, had a couple that stripped, but they are a decent product if used properly. after the first room, I decided it was easier, faster, and cheaper to just use the old remington power hammer to shoot the pins in the concrete the old fashioned way...

but I always say: If it's free, it's for me! so i'm in....

You have to drill the hole almost the same size as the Tapcon. You also have to blow it out, either with a can of compressed air or by mouth with a piece of scrap clear plastic tubing.

The reason they snap is that you are either trying to force them into to small a hole, or it bottoms out in all the dust in the hole, and then it snaps. Also, you have to drill the hole at least a half inch deeper than the size of the Tapcon.

I use Tapcons all the time, they are great.

- Drill the hole out to almost the same thickness of the Tapcon.
- Drill the hole out at least a 1/2 inch deeper than the Tapcon.
- Blow the hole out.

When you install the Tapcon, you should feel minimal resistance almost half way down. If you start installing it, and are forcing it almost immediately, then the head is going to snap off. Remove it, and drill it out more. Or even worse, if you are forcing them into hollow-block, you are going to crack the block if you force them in.

Tapcons are a must for anyone in a Hurricane Zone.

Oh another piece of advise, if the hole is to big I throw in a couple penny nails, they help grip the side walls and hold the tapcon in

ordered 5/25 and the kit was on the porch late yesterday.

I have used them for decades, and they do have directions to be followed. But never a failure or a pull out.

great support to get the kit...I'm still a satisfied customer.

Also a rotary hammer works much better then a percussion hammer. With a percussion drill the geometry of the hole can get bad because the bit can wander easier it seems.

If your tapcon strips out take a zip tie(heavier white/clear one) and insert it down the hole,trim off excess, re-drive the tapcon, .

Never thought of that :beer: nice, I'll try that instead of the penny nails i slip in when the hole is too big

Someone on another thread suggested grass line trimmer string. Others have responded back that they tried it and it worked great.

Waiting for mine. That's the only brand of fastener I will use.
