Wonder if I'll ever be rich enough or busy enough or without any friends. That's what it suggests to think the best option is I should leave hundreds of dollars in tools out on the curb.

Sometimes it's just because they want it gone and don't care if they can get a few bucks for it. 8-10 years ago I was given (by a stranger - Freecycle) A 6 ft. Craftsman work bench with a HEAVY steel frame, and 2" thick solid wood top, a 6" Paramo (Record clone) swivel base vise that looked brand new, a 10" radial arm saw, and a long 6 ton truck floor jack...

The RA saw later went to one of my good friends, as well as the bench. (Also free. I believe in what goes around comes around...)

He claims I'm responsible in some way for most of his major tolls in his shop. (I also got him a 4"planer, a Jig saw and other tools and shop equipment, and other than the DP it's only cost him the gas to come get them...)

He has a Craftsman vise about the size (and style) of that Simplex above, that he got while garage sailing with me for $30... in pristine condition too. it belonged to a model railroader... :dunno:

He's probably right, I have a 3 wheel band saw I picked up waiting for him, for cheap and a wood lathe for free... (Another Freecycle score)

Guy just didn't need the stuff. Putting it on the curb is really easy. Plus he might not have known what it was worth. I had an old laser printer I was contemplating putting on the curb a few weeks ago, for S&G's I put it on CL for $10 (against my personal rule of never trying to sell something for such few bucks) and I got a call from across the country from from sort of supply house asking if I would ship it if she emailed me the shipping label.

Hit up eBay low and behold $50-$80 for the thing plus $30 shipping. Apparently it is some crazy sought after old laserjet.

Those were some of the best vises made.

:+1:

Simplex vises are one of the best and surprisingly one of the more underrated brands. I'd love to get my hands on a larger one, someday. The biggest one I have is the same type in the ad. Still one of my favorites though.
