Bought a house w/shop. Workbench had this guy mounted to it. Looks like a badass vice, less the bolt for a handle. Only marking I can see is a big number "6". Any ideas who made it? Any good? Either way, it stays and I'm happy to have it.
I would assume the "6" refers to a 6" wide mouth on the vise itself. No idea on the manufacturer though....it does look like it's in perfect working order though!
it's probably a $75 vise new and imported from most likely China. you can sometimes find them for sale for $25-$50 used, but "FREE" is best. it should work fine if you don't use it as a press or an anvil, but not a huge old US vise like maybe you were thinking.
what I can say is the bench looks like it is very solid and made in the US and should last you for years in your new home and congrats on the house purchase. now you can bring home those big tools you didn't want to move 2 or 3 times while renting and make and fix things as you can.
There is one like that at a pawn shop around here, I can't recall the name off the top of my head. If I go there in the next couple of days, I will look at it. The big 6 is the same. I do believe there is a company that makes and rebadges those, I have an oit with the 6 on there as well, kinda a piece of **** vise, but it was free, made in Japan. It is the vise I use to beat the **** out things and it keeps my Parker in great condition. They all have their place.
Too bad the vise isn't badass old american iron. I had my doubts. Didn't feel like $$$ or look like it with the jaw alignment. Another vise I can hammer on
I'll probably start a thread on the shop "build". It's done, just old and needs updating.
