Even though I've seen this product posted a couple times in the show your tools thread, I wasn't able to locate a dedicated thread about them. So last week I purchased two of the boards plus a bag of each size of the socket holders and a couple bags of the tool clips. Grand total shipped from Lee Valley - $40.00.
And just in case someone asks, here's the part numbers
27K7904 (12)Tool Clips 2 3.50 7.00
27K7907 (12) 1/2" Socket Holders 3.60 3.60
27K7906 (12) 3/8" Socket Holders 3.40 3.40
27K7905 (12) 1/4" Socket Holders 3.20 3.20
27K7901 Toolboard, ea. 2 6.50 13.00
Turns out these things are pretty darn decent. They obviously hold 1/4 hex bits very well. Matter of fact they snap so securely one of these would make a hell of a truck bit holder even mounted vertically to the door of a box.
The sockets holders are fantastic as well. The holder snaps through the board, then turns 90 degrees and locks in place. Heck, I tried one socket of each sized and turned the board upside down shook it and I'll be damned if nothing fell off.
The tool clips, well they work very well but I think over time they'll fatigue. Laid flat, that should never cause a problem but in the vertical position I doubt they'll survive.
Even the 3/8 ratchet made it through the upside down test, but I didn't shake it. Why tempt fate
Well then I decided to get fancy and make a base plate for these. To give you an idea of size, that plate is 24" X 12" (just perfect for my soon to be had Lista tool cabinet). I was surprised how many 1/4" bits they swallowed up, matter of fact I thought I had many more then I actually did.
To sum this up I happen to think these are a viable solution to condensed socket collections. The price is on par with Ernst rails, just a tad more expensive. But considering how versatile these are may make better sense for some guys. The only down side I see is there is no method of labeling the board unless you make it yourself.
Now I just need to decide if I want to buy another board for the stuff in the middle or machine some holders for those couple of items.
