French Cleats wall

Made a Pine lining wall 130x19mm mounted on timber studs via 16ga nails.

Going to mount 17mm formply french cleats

How deep should my screws hit into the stud. Should I use 50mm or 63mm 10G screws? The thickness of the pine lining and french cleats would add up to 36mm, so 14mm left into the stud. Or must I use 63mm which goes into the stud deeper?

The cost of the screws matter here

If you don't make it strong enough, how hard will it be to do it again until you get it right?
Tell about the load you will putting on the cleats.

Also what kind of a lever will you put on the cleats?

Shear strength will be pretty high to start with so if you hang stuff that remains close to the wall the cleat will carry a lot of weight for any given fastener. If however you build boxes or other hanging devices that move the weight further from the wall it will create a lever and pulling force instead of a shear force and that would require larger fasteners to ensure the cleat doesn't pull from the wall.

When I attached my cleats I used 3" gold screws through 3/4" plywood cleats and 1/2" sheetrock attached about every 18". The french cleats are in my garden shed and mostly hold gardening tools, both hand and gas, as well as a few 8" shelves and tool boxes and nothing has fallen down or pulled from the wall.

I think the pull out value for a single #6 coarse thread screw (drywall screw) is like 170lbs per inch of penetration. So, that said, the pullout is most likely higher than the shear for a cheap screw. So, the fact that you are getting roughly a half inch into the stud and going through the attached pine wall board I think it is HIGHLY unlikely that anything is going to fall off and I suspect the wood will break before the screws let loose.

I made 3 1/2" wide slats out of 3/4" MDO and installed it on one side wall and the back wall of my 3 stall garage. (There is a 1 1/2" gap between slats) I used 3" square drive screws from McFeelys (properly countersunk) so the 3/4" for the slats + 5/8" for the drywall -> leaves about 1 5/8" into the studs and the slats aren't going anywhere
