Friggin ceiling fan.....

I have torn down and reassembled engines and done all manner of maintenance on my motorcycles,..but this damn ceiling fan is kicking me. Worse too,...I installed the damn thing 22 years ago. Its a flush mount/no down-rod Hampton Bay Windward II 54" fan with a flourescent light and remote. I'm trying to remove it so I can install a new fan/light. Being as I installed it decades ago I did not keep the installation instructions, and I'll damned to find the right installation manual online. I have it apart to the point that the motor is still somehow mounted to the ceiling mount, but I cannot get it off the mount, Argh!

Yes I have searched the Hampton Bay info on Home Depot's website, no good there.

That is a close mount, if it is a true flush mount, remove the blades, there should be some small screws at the top, remove those and the decorative cover comes off, then you are on your way.

Nope, no external screws anywhere around the cover that goes over the close mount. There is one access hole d\to a set screw on the short downrod, but it doesn't turn to access the 2nd set screw. Guess I have to call Hampton Bay customer service.

I think the cover is a twist to lock type thing. I have one of those and that's what I remember off hand. I'm at work right now so I can't check, bit your description lit a light in my memory. Good luck.

Called Hampton Bay customer service. I'll give them credit for a somewhat American accent, a real person. Well the pics I sent them only slightly guided them. They kept referring to grabbing the down rod and lift the motor assembly from the cradle, and twice I reminded them its a close mount, no external down rod, nothing to grab and lift out of the cradle. I asked for a parts diagram as I can figure it out from that. They are getting back to me after they find details on a 24 year old fan. I tried twisting on the upper cover, as hard as I dare on the upper cover, but I can tell the whole thing rotates with the ceiling/box mount bracket, so I'll wait to see the diagram. Here are some pics. The fan blades attached through the ring with the angled slots, and that ring attaches to a plate on top of the motor housing so the whole assembly spins with the motor. Its a decent design, never given me any problem, runs quiet and smooth. Just time for a change (as wifey has told me).


that rectangular hole aligned to one set screw on the internal central tube, but I cannot rotate the housing to align to the other set screw 90 degrees from the one I took out. So far all my internet searches have not found an exploded diagram or parts diagram of this fan so I have to see what HB customer service sends me.

This is my best guess. The piece on the ceiling is two parts. The top ring and the bottom. Untwist the top ring and it will drop and give you access to the screws. Actually it is likely what I just wrote. Look at 12:30 to about 12:45 seconds into this install.

A few years ago, I had one that the connection (glue?) between the decorative ring and the internal bracket fail. You could only spin the outer ring an inch or so, but nothing was moving on the inside to release the body. I eventually got it free using some flat bladed screwdrivers, but it was tricky work not damaging the fan or the ceiling in the process.

Finally! I hit it three times around with my fist, and the very top ring came loose with another hard twist.

A cordless sawzall with a demo blade is a wonderful thing. Especially when the thing that needs to be gone has built in blade guides. Like the rings on that fan.
