So did I....be prepared to pay! That's why I ended up with Silver Grey. It was my favorite of the "realistic" options (e.g. black, titanium silver, silver grey). Black and titanium silver were absolute no-go's, so silver grey it was!

I hear that. Black is boring. Estoril blue E36 M3 over Dove interior is one of the first 1/18 scale models I purchased and was part of the reason I took a liking to BMW in my early teens! I like some actual color in my interior:

A few updates this Tuesday morning. The painters came back Saturday for the 2nd and final coat of stain for the deck:

Also, our less than 5 year old State Premier tankless water heater **** the bed. It started acting up a week or 2 ago (showers taking a LONG time to get warm), and culminated with my wife waking me up yesterday morning saying the shower had been running for 10 minutes with not a drop of hot water. I go and check out the water heater and there's a small pool of water underneath it...fun:

I was able to get a plumber to check it out about an hour later. He opened the unit up and found that there was no flame and the water was not coming from either of the valves, but from the heat exchanger, itself.

Long story short, it's still under warranty (barely....5 years). I'm picking up a new unit today and plumber is coming tomorrow to swap the old one out. Incredibly frustrating that we only got 4+ years out of a Japanese made unit, but guess we should consider ourselves lucky that we won't have to pay $1k+ out of pocket for a replacement:

And last but not least, I scored a killer deal on some Blizzak WS80 winter tires for the incoming daily driver. 235/50/18's. Found them on FB Marketplace listed for $150. Offered $100 and seller accepted, so I drove up to Boston Saturday morning and picked them up. They are legit like new...9/32'nds of tread, no dry rot, no patches/plugs. Just need to pick up a cheap set of dedicated 18" winter wheels (I ordered the M340i with 19" wheels).

Of course BMW had to change the lug pattern for the new G20 3 series, so I can't just pick up a set of 5x120 wheels from just about any previous BMW. I now need 5x112, which limits my options, so might just grab something off Tirerack if nothing tickles my fancy on craigslist/FB Marketplace in the coming months.

I'm glad I opted for the red M Sport calipers...the blue were nice, but the contrast of blue and red will help them stand out more.

It's very close. Unfortunately, the house/deck were already built and sided before we signed the paperwork, so we didn't have any say on that. Tan isn't my favorite color (we would have preferred a light gray color), but we liked it enough to sign on the dots.

Exciting news on the M340i front....entering the assembly line as of yesterday morning!!

And here's a rough breakdown of the order tracking process:

On that subject, I need some input on which spoiler to get for the M340i. I'm definitely going with something from AA Concepts (where I got the front lip from), but there aren't many photos on their website showing real world applications. I need different angles and what not to get a really good idea.

That said, the options I'm down to are as follows (currently, I'm torn between #1 and #3). Curious to hear some of your input:

We took advantage of the MA tax free weekend and on Sunday, we ordered the couch for our basement. While it's back-ordered until early November (COVID), it actually works out because the work on the basement isn't scheduled to start until the end of September, at the earliest. That said, we are meeting with the contractor tomorrow for the first payment and to hopefully learn the expected start date. Here's the couch (Forte Gray 7 Piece Power Reclining Sectional from Bob's Furniture in Graphite):

Actually, I could use some feedback here. My town is notoriously slow/difficult when it comes to permits for home improvements/construction. The builder gave us the option as to whether or not we want to pull permits, which will most likely double the expected time-frame for the project. I guess if work isn't permitted, it can impact how you list a house for sale down the road. For example, from what I've read, we wouldn't be able to include any of the finished square footage in the basement as part of the finished square footage for the entire house.

Now, we don't intend to move anytime soon, and this is most likely our forever house (unless we hit the lottery). So I'm not all that concerned about the selling aspect. I've also read that you can simply claim that I, as the homeowner, am the one that did all the work/upgrades in the basement and that might let me skirt around the lack of a permit.

I'm not concerned with the contractor doing subpar work. I know several people that have used them for some big jobs in their homes and they all raved about the work. I'm more wanting to get things done as timely as possible, and not be waiting days or weeks for the building inspector to approve things. And my town doesn't allow for any automation or online permits....it's all done by paper.

Curious to hear input/feedback, either for or against, going with permits.

personally, i like the option 1 spoiler.. i think it flows better with the tapered ends. rather than the abrupt ends of the others.

on the contractor front, i literally had a meeting with our contractor to start a kitchen and he made the same suggestion. only difference for us is its a kitchen and not adding any space or really doing changing any structure. if i was adding on space i would be less okay with it personally. but on the same front, you wont get taxed on the space if its not permitted...

i swear to you, this does not exist in my country, not for regular people at least. That's what I love (and sometimes envy) about you guys in the US. So much cool stuff for everybody, lol. I may sound like I live in a tent in the middle of the jungle, I swear I don't, but I do feel like I do when I see things like this

While I don't know all of the particulars of who/why they had to do it, I know first hand a few people (in MA nonetheless) who had to rip out entire finished basements or decks because the work was un-permitted before the sale of their home could go through. And if you have a nosy neighbor who decides to blow the whistle on you while work is underway, you could have to muddle through an even longer time setback. I'm actually surprised the contractor is even willing to perform the work without a permit. That would be a red flag for me, but it sounds like you're confident in his abilities.

Thanks for your feedback on the contractor. We met with him today and he actually informed us that our town is cracking down on un-permitted work, so he actually said he would need to pull a permit. Which actually works out, because I had texted a good electrician buddy of mine and he pretty much suggested that we pull permits, as well, JUST to be safe.

And cupholders to hold alcohol during football Sundays and storage in the armrest for remote controls and the inevitable childrens toys that will make their way in there.

Yep, as you can see above, we will be pulling permits. It all worked out, because I had decided to have him pull permits before showing up at his shop today. But upon walking in, he greeted my wife and I with "yeah, we'll be pulling permits for your job". So all should be good.

Can't wait to get this started (in about a month, as long as all paperwork/permits are ready and in order). He says we're on the schedule for the first week of October. I'll absolutely document the basement finishing project.

Wonder what will happen first....My new daily arrives or the basement is done?! That said, I had TWO updates on the order tracking site today. This morning, the car was at "Final Assembly". And I literally just checked 30 seconds ago and it's now "Ready for transport"!!!!

Last Friday, my wife and I brought the boys to daycare, then played hooky and enjoyed the beautiful weather down at Onset Beach in Wareham,MA. Of course, we had to take the M3 to get some highway miles under its legs:





We then grabbed lunch at the Brew Fish Bar & Eatery. When I came out to the parking lot after eating, I had to take a photo...I mean, come on!



We then stopped at Captain Al's Tiki Bar in Buzzard's Bay (we truly are lucky for living so close to the ocean and Cape Cod) for one last beverage before heading home:










This past Sunday, a buddy of mine and I attended the 2020 BMW Ultimate Driving Experience at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro,MA. The parking lot was full of a wide variety of classic and modern BMWs...it was a car show, in and of itself. Didn't get many photos of that, however.

BMW did a great job of making everything socially distant. They disinfected every vehicle (including the road/test drive vehicles) after every single drive and made sure to space everyone out, throughout the process:











We arrived early and had about 30 minutes to kill before our 10am autocross/track time slot, so we took the X6 M50i out for a test drive. 523hp/553 lb-ft tq sure was a blast to drive:





We then got called into the tent for our pep talk prior to getting on the track:



There's one of the cars we'd be driving...my next daily driver. M340i in the same color I ordered and with the same wheels, too:

After driving each car, we headed back over for one last test drive, though we had to wait a bit:

Sorry for the delay....LOTS going on lately, so I haven't had much free time to myself. I was hoping the basement would be done before my next update here. Alas, it's not done, but figured I'd give you guys an update on where it's at.

As for the permitting...no problems, there. Already had rough inspections for plumbing, electrical and framing. Next up is insulation (which should be going up today) and hopefully the inspection takes place within the next couple of days...then walls can go up!
