Well, it is a little ways away, but this summer we should be able to start a new building, in Bend, Oregon. This will actually be the first of three, A 36 x 48 Pole barn, with 12 foot side shed, and then later we will build a 24 x 36 workshop/studio, and last, but not least, the new home with 2 car garage.
I tried to upload a sketch but even though it was below maximum, it would not go. The pole barn will be for equipment storage and have Auto shop with a lift. (Jeep and Model A.)

But first do you think I need to remove a tree or two?

As I said in the pm, will be nice to meet you when you get out here. Let me know when you are ready to take some trees down. I would be happy to help if I can have some of the wood. Both my house and shop use wood heat.

Here is the initial layout, comments encouraged. Keep in mind this building is for storage and mechanical work only, there will be a seperate one for Welding, wood working etc. that has a one car bay free. This will be expandable by up to 24 feet left or right.

I don't think I would like the wall next to the lift. I'm assuming that you have it there for heating reasons?

Thanks, for the comment, that gives me a great idea, since then inner walls are not structural the one next to the lift can be mounted on rollers so it can be slid to the rear half of the building, giving me 3/4 - 1/4 in the other direction, or the other can pivot in the center to the back, after moving the racks, and split the building the other way. Cool.

I'm also planning to move to the Bend area this summer.

Glad to see there's some GJ guys there already!

What area are you guys in? The best deals seem to be in LaPine and Prineville. Hard to shop long distance....

I live in La Pine, property is relatively cheap here but comes with some inconveniences. The winters are cold and roads usually icy between here and Bend, elevation around 4,000 ft. for me it's a day wasted and a 70 mile round trip to make appointments or go shopping in bend. Look closely at the septic system requirements in the area you are considering Deschutes county is requiring a nitrate reducing filter system now and it's expensive. La Pine is a nice place to live but if I had it to do over again I'd look ten miles south in Kalamath county. Prineville has a much milder climate, some high tech jobs (Face Book) and many more amenities. Also there are some very nice recreational facilities there.

Thanks for the info Mike! That's exactly what I wanted to know.

I lived in Alaska for 40 years, I always wonder how the LaPine winters stack up with what I'm used too. But I left Alaska to find somewhere with less winter.

Sorry for the hijack Whirnot, I'll buy you a beer this summer.

I am a little north of LaPine, about 13 miles, not quite half way to Bend. (4200 feet) We did find properties cheaper there but also larger lots available, we have 15 Acres. Mike we dound out all about the Nitrate reducing systems. Our property was approved for a standard system, and has since been changed to the new system. *****.

That looks like my place near Sunriver.

We moved from Bend to Mulino (south of Oregon City) to get away from the cold and very short growing season. We tried growing tomatoes for 5 years and they never got past the green stage. Our weather is like Portland, which we lived in from 1975 to 1984, so we are used to the rain. Plus, we love the green and you do not have to shovel the snow.

So larry_g didn't like the wall next to the lift, and after his comment, I came up with this which I really like. The blue walls are actually the same wall, folded and/ or rotated to a different position.
