from the meter pole

I have 200 amp service at my meter pole with 2 breakers under it. The house is wired into the 200 amp breaker. In the past I had a 50 and 30 amp breakers one was for shop (just lights and a welder) and the 30 amp is for the well.

Now I have buried 4/0 aluminum to my shop. Did I mess up ? I am wanting to put a 100 amp breaker in for shop. I am thinking that the 100 amp breaker won't hold the 4/0 wire correct?


so now what do I do?

the house has 100 amp wire going to in and it is wired straight to the 200 amp breaker........it was supposed to be changed to 200 amp wire.....never happen.
So do I move the house to the 100 amp and take the 4/0 to the 200 amp breaker?

You need to mount the appropriate size junction box below or next to the service. The conduit with the 4/0 goes into it, and run run another conduit out of it into the service. You use polaris blocks or something similar to splice to some lenghts of #3cu or #1al which land on the breaker (and neutral and ground bars). Another option if you have access to an electrician with a hydraulic crimper (the harborfreight one wont do) you can use reducing splices http://tnbelectricalworld.tnb.com/contractor/docs/GM-1026_LR.pdf

as far as the house with '100 amp wire' being protected by a 200 amp breaker -you need to fix that. What size and type is the wire?

the 4/0 AL to the shop, is it wire in conduit or buried cable? You ran 4 wires right?

You'd have to know what kind of wire, cable, direct bury, conduit etc, probably 150 amp?

I'd reland the wiring to the house on the 100 amp breaker and move the shop to the 200 amp.

It really sounds like you should hire an electrician though.....

Huh? Since when?

Last I checked, that's 180 amp wire that I can round up to the next breaker size if the calculated load is less than 180 amps.
