This is exactly what I have done for years and have never had a problem doing it this way.Run a lug nut on it flush with the end of the stud and use a BFH to knock it out. Once it is broken loose, spin the nut back off. By doing that if you have a stubborn one, the stud will not be peened too large to fit thru the hole in the hub.
