So the day arrives my new Extreme toolbox is to be delivered to my home. Countless hours spent researching and contemplating what to buy. The purchase goes perfect, communication with vendor stellar and then the delivery truck arrives.

So I take the day off from work and set up camp at home. Like a little kid on Christmas I wake early, eager to here the sound of that semi come down the street. I literally skip to the garage and hurry up and wait. Mind you it was very manly skipping but yes it did seem like I was moving to the beat of some power ballet.

Low and behold the driver shows up early and I am thinking awesome, this day is perfect. As I approach the truck the driver steps down and we exchange the normal pleasantries and head to the back of the vehicle. As the lift gate rises so does my anticipation. There, in all its glorious grandeur, are 3 of the largest crates I have ever seen. They are almost equal in width to the truck and wider than the lift gate. Its almost as though the driver and I instantly morphed in to twins that had the mental bond to know what each other was thinking. Simultaneously we say to each other "how the hell is this fitting on the lift gate with the palate jack"?

"Well of course its not" I said, "not with out a fork lift like it was loaded in this *****". Well of course I was a bit more tactful but had like 3 more really good adjectives to express my utter frustration with poor planning.

So I jump on the phone call the vendor and they immediately call the shipping company. As the finger pointing and more or less grunts fly nothing gets accomplished other than I offering the driver a bottle of water for the road and me going back inside sulking like the kid that didn't get his Red Rider BB-gun for Christmas.

I woke up in such a great mood, so damn close, I literally DID touch it.

wait until you finally get them unloaded, unpacked and they're' dented.

Of course, every time they are not on the ground and or moved adds to the possibility that this "COULD" happen, the crates looked in perfect condition so crossing my fingers this doesn't happen.

HA! I stalled the driver for almost 30 min as I looked for options. As for not attempting to go HULK, a man has to realize his limitations

A man knows no limitations when attempting access to a new box. Granted pulling a Matt lauer pretending you just came out of the shower might not have worked in this case but anything would have been worth a shot.

Seriously I would have uncrated the base which would have easily fit on any lift gate, then after uncrating the top used the lift gate to get it on the base. Then when all was said and done handed the truck driver a hundy for his help.

The problem is the lift gate had some safety stops on the sides that would not allow the box to fit horizontally of the gate.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
Even at half a ton 2 guys would have had issues. I know - I watched a guy try to move a 450 lb drum off a truck, the result of which was a smelly, nasty ugly spill of glop all over the ground (that he then had to clean up - it was full of moldy decomposing sump sludge). His comment - Hey, it's only a little drum it can't be THAT hard...

My immediate thought was "where's the nearest rental yard with a flat trailer and a forktruck, and how much do I have to bribe the driver to hang out until I can get there and back?"

Dealt with this many times.
Should'a called for roll-back flat bed tow truck. They can use the wheel lift to raise up to the height of the freight truck, if need be. Then winch the crates onto the tow truck and set on the ground from there.

Update

Truck arrived today, full size truck with huge lift gate, again I am excited and then the door rolls up and I look in and see every palate is destroyed and crates look not like I last saw them.

As I raise my head and hope for the best the driver attempts to have me sign off before he unloads and I just stand and stare at him.

So he seems to understand thats not happening I tell him ever crate will be opened and inspected and I will photograph everything and if anything is damaged its back in the truck it goes.

So we struggle to get the palate jack under the crates since the palates were so damaged but eventually we get them off. I ask the driver what his plan was to get them up my step driveway to my garage and he states he is leaving them at the curb, I then get a bit short and say I guess I will be extra picky and refuse for damage then.

Yeah I was being a *****, I was pissed, no fork lift on this truck and the motorized palate jack that was in the first truck was not what was on this truck.

Anyhow long story, I get him to get all three crates in my garage, we busted our backs getting them up the hill but the happy part is all were in perfect condition. One tiny dent on the back of the top box but no functioning issues ad its on the back.

So 2 hours later all done, I ask the driver to take the crates with him he says no until I pull out a Benjamin to thank him. Amazing what money can do to change a persons mind.

Beer party at my house this weekend, so excited, its been 30 years coming to get something this nice.

All's well that ends well. Why couldn't he back the truck all the way up to your garage? I guess it'd crack your driveway?

Imo you were an extremely lucky person in finding a driver willing to help do anything but get them off the liftgate onto the pavement. They are not obligated to be full service valets as their primary responsibility is to be driving the truck to the next destination.

You could have been extra picky and refused but there is no leverage in that situation, overall, its very minimal in truck-terminal freight, all the rules are tilted in advantage of the trucking companies. Your property which is already paid for would likely be held at a freight terminal, now pending your expense to pick it up from there, and subject to further abuse as it gets bulldozed all over the terminal by those maniacs driving the forklifts. If you don't believe what I'm saying, visit a busy truck freight terminal sometime :)

I paid extra for the residential delivery, I "assumed" that meant into my dwelling anyhow its all good and yeah I didn't have to give him anything but it felt like the right thing to do.

I am thrilled with the quality of these Extreme boxes they are so damn heavy duty. Ill get some pics when they are all off the palates and set up.

Anyone looking for a great box and looking for a great vendor, I have to say

https://www.rockintoolboxes.com was really a great experience. Brian was available through out the frustrations and was on my side along the way. I would not hesitate from ordering from them again!

That's why I prefer to buy pricey, large, fragile type things locally. That 60 inch flat panel TV arrives at Best Buy on a huge pallet along with a bunch of other TV's of the same model. Whereas, if you buy one off Amazon, I don't think the delivery people particularly care about your new Samsung 60" flat panel TV. Your item is just another burden to get moved and dumped off ASAP.

Be sure to share pics of the boxes loaded up with your tools. I need some decent toolboxes. My tools are all piled into portable boxes. Ugh. So it takes forever to find the various sizes I need.

Residential delivery means the truck has to drive side streets into a residential neighborhood. Businesses are generally located in more accessible arterial streets and have parking lots they can pull into to get off the street. It has nothing to do with bringing the package inside for you. You got a very patient driver that understood what he had to do in order to get rid of the crazy demanding customer.

I agree he was a good guy, and thats why he got a real nice tip. Pretty sure this wasn't a normal thing for this guy. I am thrilled to be done with the saga.

I don't think I'm cray but I have been called way worse :)

Was fun using the cherry picker to get the top box on this. Next week the two 24" side lockers show up and then I can slam them full of tools.

Correct. It also means they are not supposed to take back the crates and junk. They are just hired by the seller to deliver an item. That is it.
