Here is a great unit converter for torque units.

http://www.tohnichi.com/conversion.htm

Lets say you go on Ebay and buy a great torque wrench, only problem is, it is only marked in metric, say Nm. Your car manual only gives the wheel torque spec as 90 lb/ft. You go to the handy dandy converter above, and plug in 90 and set the units to lb/ft and you get.....

122.4 Nm or 1240 Ncm

You also get other less commonly used values, all of 'em, at once.

1 ft lb = 12 inch lbs...

1lb hung from a 12 inch bar pivoting around a center axis is the same as 12 lbs hung from a 1 inch bar on that same axis

Or just get totally lazy about the whole conversion deal-get a SO TechWrench and push the buttons until you get the right units-

As was already said 12 inch pounds in 1 foot pound.
If you want to convert from foot pounds to newton meters devide it by 0.7375
90 /0.7375=122.03
To go from newton meters to foot pounds times it by 0.7375
122x0.7375=89.975
I've used this alot at work, everything is newton meters but one of my torque wrenches is foot pounds.

OK, an old post that some may read and learn something from. Nothing wrong with that. In 2006 I do not think they had these. if they did, they were likely too expensive for the average person to even consider.

A little embarrassing for the poster but to be honest, that is how almost everyone ends up here. Do a google search and find an old thread. Decide you have something valuable to add. Get embarrassed but come back anyway.
