I just replaced a fuel filter this weekend and am wondering what is the safe and proper way to dispose of the used fuel filter? Even after draining, there appears to be a little gas left inside the filter.

Put on a HazMat suit and use a set of long reach tongs to pick up the used filter and place it in a chemically resistant bag. Seal the bag and suspend in the middle of a 5 gallon bucket using fishing line. Mix up concrete, pour it in and let it cure. Wrap the resulting concrete in plastic and take to the local hazardous waste location and pay any associated fees...

...of course I would just skip all of that and throw the damn thing in the garbage can (might let it sit outside for a bit so the gas would evaporate if I was worried about it).

I just let mine sit out in the hot Georgia sun for a couple of days before pitching it in the trash can. That allows plenty of time for the flammable fumes to dissipate.

Mine get chucked into a metal bucket until the next time the burn barrel lights up. That and all the old oil filters take up residence at the bottom and the fire's lit on top of them. As the heat works it's way down, they heat up slowly enough to vaporize the volatiles gradually and then burn up the dirty papers. I don't recommend it for anyone else, but it works for me.

you could always add some more gas, then get the cutting wheel out to open it up and see if you can get it to light up. If it doesn't light up, you at least get to see how dirty/clean it was.
