Full Flake Coverage Question

Hi All,

I will be posting pics of my "shed" build soon!

We recently had a floor installed with full coverage on the floor and 2 courses of block. The company did a fantastic job! We had one small issue, I brought to their attention with a picture, just for info down the road in case I need warranty work on that spot. Within 1/2 hr they replied saying they would have someone there in the afternoon to take care of it!!! You can't even tell where they patched!

The question I have is the vertical wall is very rough and does not seem like it has the same amount of clear coat as the floor does.

I didn't notice until I tried to mop the floor and wall after sanding the ceiling ( LONG STORY ). Floor mops no problem but the vertical surface is so rough I can't drag a mop on it.

I just want to make sure I'm not asking too much before I call them back.

Not being in that business, I’m pretty sure that the clear coat isn’t a filler or leveling agent. If you have a rough surface to start with it’s not going to make it smooth. Of course the block is also porous and may need more that a single coat of base and clear.

Now, like I said, I’m not in that trade nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn recently, and I may be mistaken.

Hi Ray-CA,

I know it's not a filler and if it followed the text of the block, I'm cool with that. It's almost like the flakes weren't scrapped off as aggressively as they did the floor.

I'm sure they rolled on the clear coat on but it is not as thick as the floor and very rough, lots of flakes sticking out.

Greg. Your not going to get the clear to level on a vertical surface like you would on a horizontal surface. It’s hard to get these coatings to cling to the vertical surfaces and not run. On the positive side, your stem walls shouldn’t collect much dirt or dust.

I don't really think the company is responsible for smooth side sections. If it really bothers you, I would get some clear epoxy and lightly sand the side walls and put on a coat with a brush. If you wait the required amount of time, you can re-coat without doing any additional prep work. Add enough coats of the clear until it's smooths out enough to satisfy you.

Yeh, I would have to do multiple coats building it up I suppose.

I guess I can spray it or use my leave blower to dust them off :)

I am very pleased with their work and how they insisted on fixing this small defect area, I didn't even notice it until I was checking out how they did my expansion cuts. Emailed at 10am, fixed it by 2!!

Hi Notchy12000,

I ended up going with GarageLiving. I'm very pleased with their work and will post pics after my slat wall and cabinets are in :)

They came down in price to match a cheaper quote. Fixed a small spot that had no flake on the edge of my expansion cut, that you could only see if you were looking for it.

I didn't even request a repair but they insisted and came the same day I emailed them to patch it.

Great service, very professional!

When doing a full broadcast one of the steps is that after the excess flecks are swept off, the floor must be scraped to remove the high spots from the overlapping flecks. This is difficult to do on vertical surfaces, and in our opinion would be fairly normal for the vertical to be rougher since the verticals see no foot traffic and won't bother when not wearing shoes.

Thanks, Armorpoxy

Yup, they did the scrapping on the floor and walls, was just rougher than I expected not a big deal though. Very happy with the work. Not that I care what other people think but everybody that has seen it just loves it.

I can't believe how easy it cleans up!

Hi, Greg,

I'm not sure if you're still monitoring this forum, but I'm currently in Alberta, Canada, and I'm interested in the same flooring brand you mentioned. It's been some time since you installed your floors. How are they holding up now, especially considering the harsh Canadian winters?
