Hi,

Currently picking garage doors with my contractor and I've fallen in love with full view garage doors. My garage is set back about 80 ft from the street so I'm not worried about people seeing in as I also have some privacy hedges being planted. Can anyone recommend a good supplier around the tristate/DMV area or a national supplier who ships? Here's the type of door I'm looking at. Full black aluminum frame with clear glass. Thanks

I would be worried about ease of breaking glass and easy entry, not someone looking in.

I think if someone gone that far, they’re getting in no matter what. They’ll just break some other window or kick a door in.

I’m seeing more and more of these doors.most with dark tint.
They look good on the right home.

I had one quoted out a couple years back 2018 IIRC. It was a 9x18ft door with frosted insulated glass, Avante series by Clopay. Was about 9K installed. I decided to build modern barn door that open to the inside of the building. I didnt have to worry about the door affecting a loft I wanted to build in the front.

Fred Johnson in Annapolis Junction, MD was the Dealer.

Many service stations had all glass doors.
Unless you like cleaning glass all the time. And showing anyone that passes by what you own.
Don't forget today everyone has in their pocket a camera with a 20x zoom.
They will be able to see everything from the street if there is a direct line of sight.
Maybe if you are going this far, look at glass sun room glass french doors. making the garage look like just another room of the house.

I love mine, from Menard's 1600$ 6 week wait 10x10 not insulated glass
Installed myself, south facing gives A LOT of light and solar heat gain in the winter( it's 25° this morning) my shop will be 50° by noon.20181013_153027.jpeg20190320_113749.jpg

I've looked at these, mine will also be 10x10. I was concerned about the uninsulated glass, do you notice a lot of cold draft?

OP, I've had the same thought, I have been looking at black aluminum with tinted glass. Everything I'm seeing online is $3K'ish for 10x10 insulated.

The heat gain from turning my garage into a greenhouse would be enough to dissuade me from using this type of door.
That and anyone being able to see what is inside.

I have two 10w x 8h all glass garage doors on my enclosed back patio of my house. I had originally looked into the sliding glass panels, boy were those expensive. Like $1000 or more per linear ft, plus installation that could only be done by the panel mfr's installers. So instead I put two all glass garage doors with high clearance tracks so they open up and stay near the ceiling. Back patio overlooks backyard and my pool, so not really any issues with the security looking in from the street. Pic attached to show, this is before I built the steps, but point is to show the doors.

Those look great. I wanted them As well. But my wife mentioned I’d have to keep the garage cleaned up, or else it would look like hell . Plus they were 3 times the cost of my insulated ones. I ended up going with 2 rows of glass on the top panels.

There is a house in our neighborhood that has all clear doors, definitely not common, but in a private neighborhood. I dont think i could ever pull it off as my garage is always a mess. Looks great on the house.

Have another neighbor that has frosted ones, those look really cool at night when he has a light on as you can see the silhouette of the car inside. he did have the glass broken a few times during construction.

The clopay door is impact resistant. I know the thermal panels were not cheap. Ideally if you could sub it for polycarb it would be stout and pretty break resistant.

Wow that looks great! I'm living to do 9x8 doors but it's up in the air as we're still figuring out final dimensions. 1600 sounds like a steal. As you, I don't need insulated glass but do want a ton of natural light coming in.

Did menards have custom track options? I see yours run at an incline to flush up against the ties. And did the have spring tensioners that were adjusted for the additional load? I was looking to do the same thing as I'll be adding a lift. *Edit* n/m I see the options once I started a design.

The side door on my shop is like that. It looks out over the backyard towards the pool. Provides a TON of light inside the shop.

Haas will do them for you.

Just be aware that you have like zero insulation with all that glass...even if you go with double paned...

It would be helpful for you in future posts to add your location to your name. DMV for me is DC, MD, VA. Is that you as well? If you are interested in full view, there was a company here that had all glass garage doors that resembled french doors.

Anyone that does commercial doors shouldn't have much trouble with that.

I'd be interested in seeing it with solid panels instead of glass on the bottom couple panels. I like natural light and the ability to see out. It's a lot of glass though.

Do you have a picture of the French door garage that you're speaking of? It sounds very interesting and I'm n curious to see it. I'm right in the Philly suburbs so I'm willing to travel to any suppliers in the dmv (dc md va) or tristate (nj,pa, ny) area for the doors.

The thought of cleaning 300+ square feet of glass (both sides) would make me look for something else. Maintenance time and costs should considered.

There's a beautiful house around the corner from us - they have frosted glass panes. You can just make out the silhouette of of something low slung and fast (vette? Porsche?).

The doors really make the garage stand out.

When I had a custom door ordered at Menards the order sheet had a track measurement page.
I filled it out asking for a floor to ceiling vertical with a follow the roof line (vs horizonal) extension.
The door came with perfect fit tracks and the springs pre-adjusted.

BAck when I had a self-serve car wash, I had an automatic on the side that used translucent panels. The was a 10x10 door and the translucent panels actually were layered and had some insulating value. I had one panel that was clear so I could keep an eye on what was going on during the wash cycle. I think the basic door was something like $1,000 (I really don't remember). It used an overhead shaft with a counterweight on one side. On the other end, I had a twin pneumatic cylinder that drove the door open/closed. Here is the company I used: https://airliftdoors.com/

I guess they have gone up in price quite a bit (I bought mine about 17 years ago), but here are 4 used ones with all the hardware for $4,800: http://www.carwashconsignment.com/equipment/accessories-miscellaneous/2823-airlift-clear-2000

I have an insulated 9 by 10 traditional garage door with insulated glass panels in all but the top and bottom panel and I love it. Cost was only for the additional panels having glass in them. It makes my basement garage feel much more open. My only problem is I find myself looking out the door quite often rather then working.

Thanks so much for your pictures. After hearing everyone's opinions and pictures I'm sold. I'll be starting a new build thread and have pictures there. Thanks again

We're installing an AlumaView® AV200 by Raynor. I can't tell you how it is yet, as it's not installed. I can tell you that an 8x8 door is about $3000.

If you get the clear glass, a sign shop can install dusted or frosted on it (preferably on the inside so no one can pick it off and if the windows are dirty..you can't see it!). The diffusion of sunlight is nice (like in the pics above) and no one can see in. if you are handy and want to learn something new, it's really not that hard to do.

We want to get those garage doors as well, but not quite sure how easy would it be to fix them if something would go wrong. Talking of garage stuff and things, what can you recommend as a coating material for the garage? Here is a page ( https://a1garage.com/epoxy-garage-floors-guide/ ), where I could read about epoxy coating and that it's maybe the best material for the garage floor. What can you say about it? Did you use it?
