Hey guys,

I posted a couple of questions on the board here about this project. What you're looking at is my son's 4H electrical project. This year he is supposed to either build a lamp from scratch or refurb an old lamp.

We decided to refurbish an old Dazor machine light circa about 1970. I got this from a machinery seller for a real good price, because it was so screwed up. My son and I went to the junk pile and found an old cast iron gas-regulator case to use for a base. He did all the milling (with supervision) to make the aluminum base, and drilled and tapped all the holes.

The wire is 16 Gauge. We bought one that had a molded plug on the end of it, but when reviewing the 4H project book saw that that wasn't allowed...so we cut the plug off and wired on a new one. The boy is an expert at tying Underwriter's knots now.

Up top, it got a new leviton push type socket.

Oh...and he stripped every bit of the old light to bare metal, primed and painted it. There is a little bondo in the lamp shade now...which you can see if you look. He's not a bad body man for a 12-year old...but I probably wouldn't let him work on my car just yet.

Good times!

Phil

Boys and Girls should have their interest sparked by projects like this. On a machinst's forums I visit, Fathers have had sons and Daughters out machining parts(with supervision)in the shop. This can later lead to the kids getting "Hands on" experiance working on cars and other machinery.

I agree A+. Nice job! Fun doing projects with your kids. My sons and I have built several projects over the years. It teaches them the trades they can always fall back on.
