I was in Sears checking out the tool section this week. I found a couple pair of pliers on the clearance rack. Not knowing the original sale price, I took out my phone to scan the bar code using the Red Laser app.

The first was a pair of 7" End Cutters. The results came back, "Product of Channellock." So I picked up pair of 9" Craftsman Pro Linesman Pliers. Results came back as "Product of Western Forge." It also produced the same results for a pait of regular Craftsamn 10" Slip Joint Pliers.

I decided to check out a few other items in the garage and found that several items come back as a product of some company other than the brand name.

There are multiple iPhone apps that do this sort of thing now. Try the amazon one. I use it for tools all the time now. I also use it for books. I was at Home Depot the other day with my wife and she wanted a particular book. I scanned it with the amazon app, ordered it with Prime and told her it would be at our home in a few days. Amazing, and at amazon's price, not HD's. It's the same as red laser but it specifically looks up stuff on the amazon website and it's pretty fast. Bing also has one of these that's pretty popular. The amazon scanning capability seems to be much quicker and easier to use than the scanning on red laser.

Google Shopper is built into Android's web browser already. Just install one of the many product UPC scanner apps available in the app store if you don't have one already and Google Shopper will open up as soon as you scan an item's bar code.
