Funace placement

I got this furnace for free through my dad from someone who was giving it away. I'm going to hoist up and fasten it to the undeer side of the rafters. My question is where should I put it? The barn is 30'x40' and the pic shows the 40' (west) side The tank will have to go on the south (right) side because I'm planning on a lean-to on the north end. The middle of the rafters has wood down so it can be used as storage and the width of the rafters won't allow me to put it up in them. My work bench goes from the big door all the way up to the north west corner and the compressor is mounted on the opposite wall in the north east corner. My old man suggested that I put it toward the north west corner. Any suggestions as to where to put it? If I bend over far enough and lube up real well it might go there. And where would you suggest I put the thermostat? I don't think they'll both fit there, no matterr how far I bend over.

I'm good with that if you're going to give me a better one. This was working in a barn and was pulled when the guy moved, about a month ago. The price was right and it's about what I can afford. It's got to be cheaper to run than the kerosene torpedo I used last winter and smell better. I'll be waiting for your shipment of my new furnace!

Trust me , you really don't want that thing installed. I am sure you can find an older Hi Eff unit if you look in the paper , Craigs list , etc. . Anything will be better than that !

But the bottom line is most used furnaces are trouble waiting for a place to happen.

I won't even install one due to liability issues.

That is a horizontal furnace and it can not be installed any other way , he needs to junk that thing.

It's like someone buying a 35 year old Volkswagen and expecting it to run at 100 miles an hr with out shaking itself to death.

Really, scrap it. You can easily find a much more efficient unit, used , for cheap.
That thing will spin Your gas meter into helicopter mode.

Not really. Most of the stuff the wife and I have is bd/s (before divorce/school). We bought the Sonic because I needed something cheap, reliable, and great on gas since I have the ultimate commute from purgatory. Everything else is pretty much dumpster dive finds from my dad, or leftovers from the late FiL. Will this be worse than putting $30+ a weekend that the torpedo burns through (eats up all of our scrap/bottle return money)? It does lay horizontal and it came with two short 90 degree pieces of duct work. As it is, I'll be turning in pop bottles in order to pay for the flue stack. I have to say the Lord has given my old man the gift of scrounge and he does a great job of keeping me in raw materials. Anyway, thanks for your advice and actually listening.

Got it . Tough way to go but I sure would look into a newer style furnace. You can get them pretty cheap . Here's some thing to try. Call around to the local heating contractors and ask them if they have anything they will either sell you really cheap or give you that still works . you should not have any trouble finding a shop with a unit they recently took out. There are a lot of heating companies in your area. By the way . I worked at the Old's plant years ago , I quit because it was boring as hell for me. Though I had a different job every week it was still boring.. I lasted 90 days.

If people have no real answers to the OPs question, why reply? I'm sure the guy knows the unit is old and not efficient. He received a free working furnace and would like to install it. Hopefully somebody will have an answer to his questions.

Because some times it's better not to do something than to do it. Just because he got it cheap does not make it right to install it.

Thanks Big Gus and Mygarageone for at least not blowing me off. I know it's inefficient, that's part of why the guy got rid of it. Between the government rebates, the upgrade and having to rent a truck (at least a couple of days) to move it, it wasn't going to cost the guy very much to buy new. So I get that's it's inefficient, but will it be cheaper than the $30-$40 a weekend that it cost to run my kerosene torpedo? If it's going to be close, then not having to deal with the smell will make it worth the time and effort to put it in. If it's going to cost me significantly more to run the furnace, then I'll continue to fight with the torpedo

keep the thermostat at 45 at night and only turn it up when you get in there to work and i think you won't even notice the gas used. At least I don't with mine. I hope you at least got drywall up and all the joints taped.

I'm in the process of putting up insulation, so no drywall/plywood yet, but it's coming. I don't plan on heating constantly, but use the torpedo to get the temp up and the furnace to keep it there.

Just to let you know, I've decided to put the furnace inboard of the center of the bench. I figure that will be where I'm least active, so need the heat the most. Thanks for your suggestions.

Once you have a furnace installed I bet you will throw that torpedo out.
It will be like night and day.

It could be 10 degrees out and when I turn my heat on it is only 10 min before I'm in my tshirt and drinking a cold beer.

I am not sure what the code is for installing a furnace in your area is, but I suspect you will need to have at a minimum a double walled exhaust vent. It is also possibly that you will need to have an inlet pipe to allow fresh air in for combustion. Again, I have no idea what your local codes are, but it would be in your best interest to check into it before you do anything.

An inefficient furnace heating an uninsulated space that large is going to use quite a bit of fuel, and a lot of the heat is going to go right out the exhaust vent.

I am not so sure you will be saving much money, if you save any money at all, by switching to this furnace. Also, I tend to think the installation costs, if done according to local codes, is probably going to shock you.

I wish you all the best, but I must admit, I have my doubts about this furnace being a good idea.

I understand your reservations. I have the insulation from a project the late FiL never finished, so I'll be able to insulate the entire barn. I already have 3 of the four walls near completion and plenty for the ceiling. I was planning on double wall flu and pulling the inlet air from the "attic". I'm also planning on using cement board around the flue stack. I need floor space RIGHT NOW, so I need to hang this. Once I get the insulation done, then I can finish the install, propane line, flu, inlet duct, outlet turn down and thermostat. Nothing gets done fast around our place, because everything is done on the cheap. Done right, but cheap.
