So I'm down in the shop putting some paint on an old Ridgid pipe wrench that I'm bring back to life, and I've come to the realization that I have a bunch of funnels and no really good way to store them. They're too big to fit in a tool box and I don't want them hanging above my bench to drip stuff everywhere. Has anyone had a stroke of genius about a good way to store them?

I use an old, large plastic toolbox that somebody threw out. I put a couple layers of Pig Mat in the bottom to catch any drips. I have a large tin juice can that I set them on to drain them first before I put away in the plastic tool box. Not the best system, but it works for me at home.
Cheers,
Jim Don

I stood all mine up on a shelf in the parts washer. Anything that will drain will go into the washer. Also it is handy if I want to rinse them out before I use them.

5 gal bucket. Drill some holes in the sides towards the top. Put some speedy dry or pig mats in the bottom. Run some mechanics wire or twine across the holes in a star pattern to create "holders" for the funnels and your done. I'll provide a pic tomorrow if interested or a walk through but I don't really think its required lol

I throw them in a cardboard box, with all the drum brake extras. Usually rinse them out first, let them dry by the water fountain or the sink.

No good way, IMO. Funnels are a necessary evil.

I like this idea...I guess you could make different pattern if you have smaller funnels right?

My funnels? They constantly get stolen out of the shop by coworkers and family. I have two left out of the ten I bought a few weeks ago. So in short, all of my funnels are stored by different people. I swear I supply the whole area with funnels! </grumpy old man rant>

easy way to drain funnels... I took a plastic jug from juice, I think it is about 1/2 gallon or so. I turned it upside down, cut a hole in the middle and poked a hole in the side on the same end to hang on a screw or hook. The funnel sits in the hole and dribbles into the "top" of the jug. It's clear so you can see how much oil is in there and to empty it you can open the cap on the bottom end and drain into the waste oil jug after a while. I also took an old quart oil bottle and cut the bottom off. Poked a hole in the side near the bottom. Turned it upside down (cap down) and it's big enough to hang the oil pan above and just put the spout in the quart size bottle. To drain pull off the nail/screw and either pour out or turn off the cap and dump in the waste oil jug.

I stack mine one on top of the other (smallest to biggest) inside a plastic tub. When I start getting really big ones I'll split the piles into two.

Although, I'm wanting to get one of these flexible funnels:

My concern with storing funnels is how to keep them clean. The oil coating, even when wiped, retains dirt and dust. I don't want that contaminating the fresh oil when I use it next.

Anyone have a good method to deal with this?

Rinse with mineral spirit or equivalent then wipe it down

After looking at these ideas, I wanted to share my own oil and grease storage area. Thanks everyone for the ideas!

I just use a piece of 2" PVC with a end cap and have it attached to the side of my tool bench and the store all my funnels from the largest on the bottom to the smallest at the top of the stack. I do have to drain it about every 5 years or so when the first funnel's end is wet.

5 gallon bucket with bent loop coat hanger brackets hanging from the rim on the inside. It has 3-4 stacks of different funnels from large to small and I also store my grease guns in there handles hanging from the rim. Shop towel cover on top to keep debris off tunnels. Empty the bucket once a decade. Even caught a mouse in there once. Got in somehow and drowned in the oil. Win win.
