I had to chuckle at this Inside Track coupon offering a set of "impact universal joints".
In 1/2", 3/8" and the ever-popular 1/4" impact size.
Has anyone ever seen a 1/4" impact anything?
I have 1/4" air ratchets, but they aren't going to stress even a chrome CMan socket or swivel.

Well, you can get 1/4 square drive impacts. Both Chicago Pneumatic, and IR currently sell one. As well, most tool companies sell 1/4 impact sockets.

And, technically you "Should" use impact stuff on air ratchets.

I have a hex 1/4 that I mainly use with a square adapter, and the IR impact is on my list.

There must be a market if multiple companies make 1/4 pneumatic impacts, as well as cordless ones, and a ton of companies are making drive tool accessories, and sockets.

snapon man got my buddy to buy a blue point 1/4 impact gun once. first time he tried it was on some valve cover bolts. wouldnt budge 'em. got his money back the next week when snappy rolled around.

They really aren't meant for that sort of thing. More interior/small piece work.

I have a 1/4 impact that see's a ton of use as well as a 1/4 inch breaker. I use the impact for inner fenders, core support covers, radiator bracket bolts...you name it. That being said...i use chrome sockets with it and have never broken one or mushroomed one.

I bought these once, and actually posted about it in the pass/fail thread way back when I first joined. I gave it a big FAIL mainly because they put my 1/4" one in and never even assembled it!

The other two were ok, but the 1/4" was in three pieces, the rivet pin was never "squished" in. It was like someone just threw in the pre-production parts in to the packaging. So you can imagine how well their other quality control methods go.

heh ive got a 1/4 cordless impact i use everyday
but i dont use that kind of swivel; and i just use chrome sockets
you need the impact sockets for the pneumatic ones because they spin a higher rpm

Is that like Breitling watches or Mont Blanc pens? Something to have for show, but of no actual use?

It's strange that you bash 1/4" drive impacts. :headscrat Especially after so many people here said they find them useful.

I've used mine quite a bit. It's great for driving screws. If you build anything with wood, it's really nice to have. Much better than using a cordless drill.

As others have said, it also works great for interior work or other small screws/bolts.

Steevo i use a 1/4" impact everyday for scrap disassembly honestly don't know what i did before i had it hex and 1/4 bolts RUST on ac units even if i don't get them out i've gead they snap the heads off

there are tons on bolts on cars with 10 and 8 mm heads, and my milwakee 12v puts out 70~ ft/lbs
theres videos of a matco 1/4 impact lifting a car engine
honestly ive run dozens of bolts and nuts everyday loose with mine for the last year

I guess I don't include electric "impact" tools in the category.
I have some DeWalt impact guns, but they are screw drivers, or hex drivers, and not what I think of when we talk about "impact tools", which I assume are pneumatic.

And i HAVE and USE both daily

ripping apart appliances a/c units and anything else with an acr tank

Mine's been a lifesaver more times than I can count. Granted, it's a cordless (Snapon CT525), but it's still plenty tough to destroy chrome sockets.

The 1/4" impact is great for removing the screws that hold the cover UNDER the engine on all the newer cars ... saves alot of time. :)

+1 1/4 impact sockets are great. I have some snap ons and some matcos. that GP set looks great esp for the money. I use my Makita 1/4 impact daily all around the vehicle inside and out

One of the few truck brand tools I have is my 1/4" Mac air impact. It gets ALOT of use. Maybe it's because it's so light and easy to maneuver...or I may just be lazy and don't want to get up and get a wrench or a ratchet.
When I say ALOT of use, I am talking mostly disassembly. And I don't wrench for a living but with my hobbies it sometimes feels like it.
