I went over to a buddys house and there was a guy there I didnt know, He said he needed to raise some cash and wanted to know if I would like to buy a nice Mikita saw he "used in his business" I bought it for 35 bucks and considered it a bargin....Several weeks later while at the buddys house again I asked about the other guy he knew that (I thought he was a carpenter) about maybe another deal. The friend said "Nope , He wont be around for a while , HES IN JAIL FOR STEALING POWER TOOLS........Well afterall he did say he used them "IN HIS BUSINESS" LOL:confused:

Take a copy of the serial # with you.

He should probably just take the saw in. If someone can't prove ownership, I would think that he'd get it back after the statute of limitations is up.

SAY WHAT? RECEIVING STOLEN PROPERTY? CALL THE DETECTIVES AND TURN THE SAW IN? I will do so as soon as the cops make an effort to get back a few of the many stolen items stolen from my shop! Theres no law that says you cant buy a used saw as long as you buy it in good faith. GEZZZZZZZ Im not given back the stinkin saw untill I get back my sticken money!

Um... Yes, there is a law against it. The only factor that makes you something other than an accessory to the crime is the fact that you bought it in good faith. Up until now you're simply looking at the cost of this lesson being the cost you paid for the stolen merch. If you don't 'fess up, you now fall under the legal classification of an accessory after the fact. I will admit that it is probably unlikely to be prosecuted as such, that is how the law usually reads.

I'll assume that you're trying to make a funny, however, and leave the morality lectures for my kids. :)

So basically your moral standards aren't worth $35? Truly pitiful... You're no better than the ******* who stole the saw in the first place.
Tools are the what a lot of us use to earn a living, a stolen tool is taking away the ability of someone to earn a living. The fact you KNOW it's stolen makes you pondscum.

Personally, knowing that the saw was stolen, would prevent me from using it and I would have to take it in just to get rid of it. I would be thinking about whom it really belonged to and who should be using it rather than concentrating on what I was doing. I gain pleasure from working with tools and creating things, working with hot tools would ruin all that.

PS: I find the scum who took or has my laptop and digital camera, you can not imagine what I will do to you.

You were probably pissed off when you got robbed eh? I wonder if the previous owner of that saw was also pissed off when he found it missing. :headscrat

Maybe the deal with getting the saw for a great price is a partial repayment on what you had stolen. Gotta think outside the box.

I think a lot of you guys are jumping the gun. There is nothing that says the saw he bought is a stolen saw. Just because the guy is in the slammer for selling stolen tools, doesn't mean THIS tool is stolen.

That being said, it's probably a good idea to go take it in just in case. The cops aren't going to take your saw unless they have a report saying that that particular saw was stolen (thru serial number or other means).

Dude.... chill. It's HIS decision. I know that you are passionate about doing what you feel is right, but calling people names isn't going to solve anything. I have had my car stolen and I truly understand the sheer violation of being a victim. The whole situation is unfortunate. I think BMW said it best. Fairlaneman will have to decide what he feels is right in this situation.

I agree with everyone that thieves need to be arrested and put in jail. I have had my home/garage violated by thieves 3 times. They have never taken enough at one time for me to collect hardly anything from my home owners insurance. I caught them last time and they dared me to do anything as they walked away. The cops are next to worthless and make no effort for any follow up. Im glade the guy that sold me the saw was put in jail. I guess if I try to confront any next time thieves I will end up being the one in the wrong but whatever it takes they wont leave next time.

My old man had his work van cleaned out once. They took all his cordless stuff and a bunch of materials. He's not the type of person that keeps alot of savings, so that hit him pretty hard when it happened.

Most everyone has been touched by thieves. And their actions sure can make one feel violated. I don’t condone violence; but in the old days horse thieves got shot! But in today’s world you can get away with murder and only get a slap on the wrist. Others have posted it best, anyone of us will have to decide what he feels is right in a similar position.

Twenty-five years ago $3,000.00 worth of my machinist tools were stolen from work. Everything from micrometers, depth mics, Intrepit indicators, to a priceless precision grinding vice that my father made years ago. It is pictured on the granite layout plate in my garage photos. Knowing the police wouldn’t do anything, I took it upon myself to retrieve what was mine. In the next few months I visiting other tool shops in the area, and purchased back the majority of my tools for what they paid for them,, like quarter of what their worth. Later the detectives visited the three shops that led to arresting an apprentice where I worked. He lost his job, got probation and made no more restitution for the rest of my missing tools. Not even an apology!

I knew the thief’s father for years, and got his son the job. The father hasn’t spoken to since, as if I was at fault! He couldn’t understand why I didn’t drop the charges. At that time I couldn’t. It was charges from Ohio he had to deal with. He had plenty of chances to right things before he was charged.

Geez, it doesn't seem like it should be that hard.

Call up the local cop shop. Explain what happened. Give them the serial number of the saw.

If it comes up as stolen, then you just have to give it to the cops. You're only out a measley 35 bucks, and in return you get a lot of good karma.

If it dosen't come up as stolen, you keep the saw, and still get a lot of good karma.

Last time I called the cops with inportant information about a break in at my house they NEVER BOTHERED TO EVEN CALL ME BACK,,and the matter was much more inportant than a saw that might have been stolen. What goes around comes around I guess!
