I am in the process of building a 32x56 shop with 16 foot sidewalls. I am putting in floor heat in and am thinking on putting a house furnace in for a recovery unit. The reason is I would like to add an a/c unit to it. I found a 88k btu furnace and a/c unit that is only 5 years old for sale at a good price an C/L but I don't know much about heating so my question is, is this going to be big enough? I have in mind to put it in the top corner in the shop and run spiral ducting with a few registers pointing down. In the summer I don't need it 65 degrees in there I just want to take the humidity out and cool it to 75 or so.

I just installed a hanging Beacon Morris 75k btu heater in a slightly larger shop ~32 x 75' work area with 16' ceilings) and so far-so good, although it's too early in the season to make a positive statement of success.

I'm using the in-floor to keep the shop at 42-44 degrees and the hanging heater brings room temp to 60 degrees in about 15 minutes. With the heated floors, 59-61 degrees is a comfortable temperature. I can always bump up the in-floor thermostat a few degrees when the ambient drops to -25 degrees if the 75k recovery time is excessive.

A ducted system like you propose will provide more even heat distribution than my hanging heater.

Without the in floor heat, my heating guy estimated I would need closer to a 150k BTU unit.
I don't know where in Minnesota you are, but the high ceilings may preclude the need for AC. My building is well insulated and I found that the working conditions were excellent all summer just by opening the oh door and a few windows.

I have a 45,000btu hanging furnace in my garage which is 28'x36' with 8 ' ceilings. Fo my addition, I bought a 75,000btu hanging furnace. The addition is 28' x 36' with 10' walls and scissor trusses. The odd thing is, my 45,000btu furnace will heat both places comfortably when it is 30 degrees out. It will take it up to 65 degrees, and the larger addition seems to pull the heat from the smaller area to warm it.

I think your 88,000btu unit will warm thing efficiently depending on how you run any ductwork. I used to have an 88,000 home furnace in my garage but replaced it to make for more room. The furnace was a downdraft furnace, so I made a base up off of the floor with registers on two sides, and then I had a 30x30" cold air return at the top of the furnace. I could easily keep the garage at 70 degrees with the furnace cycling on and off when it was below zero outside.

Curious what is the cost of a used furnace ?

For the price I can get brand new furnaces with a warranty I generally try to avoid installing somebodys used furnace,6 weeks after you install somebodys used furnace they expect you to come out and replace stuff for free.
I can get a brand new 80% furnace that size for around $500.00 with a warrantee.;)

I just removed an oil fired furnace from my house & have it on C-List for a little above scrap value. I figure I won't get much from the scrap man so I through it on C-List to see what happens.
I currently have an older oil fired furnace in my shop & it keeps the shop warm.
