furnace smell(?)

i installed a 45k btu modine hot dawg on my ceiling. i used a duravent b vent kit to run the exhaust out the rear wall; it slopes down at 1/4" per foot. the propane installer used soft copper line from the 150 gallon tank to the furnace with no drip leg - when i asked him about this he said a drip leg is not required for this short of run (28'). i have no reason to doubt him as he was very knowledgeable and licensed but i have never seen one hooked up like this.

it heats the garage up very well and very quickly. it has been running for 6 days.

my issue is that i can smell it. i'm not exactly sure what i smell, i know its not raw propane. i am quite familiar with the smell of propane as i worked around it a lot at a previous job.

when the installer bled the line the garage smelled of propane. i aired out the garage with all the doors open.

when i walk in the garage i smell something like burned propane. i dont notice it while i am in there, only when i walk in. its not powerfully strong.

i have had three different people walk into the garage and i asked them if they smelled anything and they said "NO". one person said it smelled like a typical furnace had been running but it was a perfectly normal smell.

when i am at work and walk into the furnace room i smell a similar type of smell but this is a nat gas furnace so the smell is different, but a similar type of smell.

is this normal? i think i may be over sensitive to this and its nothing. i have carefully checked for b vent leaks and its all set up tight. i sealed up the draft hood connector myself and its done well. 3 people tell me its a normal smell that every furnace makes.

i used to drive a propane forklift and the smell made me nauseous and gave me headaches. i repeatedly asked the service people to come look at the forklift and they would come out and give it a detailed check and say its fine (and i believe them. they really did go over it well and didnt half *** it at all)

i think i am sensitive to propane and other things. i had what i thought was a strong gas smell in my truck that no one could smell. i went over the entire fuel system many times and finally located a problem with the sending unit gasket - i replaced it and no more smell but no one notices a difference.

am i being paranoid? is this all normal? should i get a CO detector or some such?

even the propane guy came out and said its fine, he couldnt smell a thing.

You have an appliance that burns a fuel yes you should have a carbon monoxide detector ! You may as you said just be sensitive to the smell it gives off but get a carbon monoxide detector aaaaaaaaaaand while your at it if you have gas heat or propane or a gas or propane water heater in the house get one ofr the house as well. The one in the house I recomend putting in the master bedroom by the way :D.

That's interesting and maybe it's just you, and apparently me. I have a propane water heater and to me it stinks. Nobody else notices anything and I had the propane co check it out, the tech said all is good and he didn't smell anything either.
:dunno:

I don't know if this is relative or not. I had a problem with a very large water heater not exhausting properly and I could smell it. The problem turned out to be that I didn't have enough air coming into the room to allow the exhaust to go out. Maybe try opening a door or window slightly and see if you feel a draft coming in.

I have a Mr Heater 45k btu, I hooked it up and it ran good for a while until it changed the tank (100lb). I had a bit of something that clogged up the jets.
I blew them in reverse and all ran fine... In the spring I started to get this smell, I had no need for the heater so it didn't bother with it..
The smell was like a dead animal--not propane. Well by Bother in law told me the smell was propane---I said the tank was just about empty so there couldn't be any gas...
Well I turned off the valve and bam! the smell went away. Boy I couldn't believe it.....Hmmmm---now I know>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>:lol_hitti

IMO if it is vented properly there should not be any smell. Definitely get yourself a CO detector. I just picked one up that also detects unburned gasses.

I had my Reznor 75KBTU natural gas heater hooked up last week and other than the initial burning off of the new heater, there is no smell when it is operating.

Just a thought, but if I run my LP down below 10% I can smell the additive they add to it. Tank full??

I would also HIGHLY RECOMMEND an explosive-gas detector! They are different than carbon monoxide as they detect the raw propane or raw natural gas before it gets a high-enough concentration to explode. There have been 2-3 houses in East Tennessee that exploded due to leaking propane or natural gas in the last few years.

its a 150 gallon tank, he said he put 2 gallons of (something i cannot remember, methanol maybe? something to dehydrate the tank) and 30 gallons of propane. so no, not full. he said he would be out in around 60 days to fill it all the way.

So a full tank would be 120 gal. (80% is about all they will fill it to)
My math (which fails me more often than not) says you have 20% in the tank. That eliminates my suspicion, but....

What would they add to the tank before the propane?? I just know from my experiences, but I have never had anything added other than the LP off the truck. Even with a used tank bought from another co-op.

I guess I would just call the company instead of us speculating.

I did a quick search on 150 gal tanks. Shaped just like my 1000 gal. here at the shop and my 500 gal. at home so pics aren't narrowing it down :lol_hitti

The search I did weighed a 150 gal. tank at around 315 pounds. (EMPTY) So now I am even more confused.

Just take a minute to call them and say that something smells funny.

What is added to the Propane is Methyl Mercaptan as a odorant that smells like rotten cabbage. I suspect you have a tiny leak and this is what your smelling.

I still don't understand adding 2 gallons of anything to 30 gallons of LP? Isn't that stink added at the refinery?

Adding 2 gallons of Methyl Mercaptan would be overkill for sure. Maybe what they're adding is Isopropyl Alcohol to absorb the water inside the vessel as the level goes down and condensation forms inside.

I FOUND THE ANSWER!!!!

Talked to my HVAC guy this morning. YES, they add extra Methyl to all new tanks to "season" them.

I guess if you don't prep the new tank with an over kill mix it just takes the Methyl that is in the LP and absorbs it. When it absorbs that little bit of stink juice that is in the LP, you will never have enough of it down the line if you have a leak.

Weird. I suppose that is why I smell that odor when I ran my tank too low last year.

Have your tank filled and everything should be just fine
