So we are looking to put in a LP gas fireplace in our 1880's brick farm house, something in the 20-30K BTU range.

The fireplace will be located in a central location on the main floor to supplement heat during the winter months.

What I need to figure out is how to control the existing furnace, as the thermostat is currently right next to where the fireplace will go.

How is this normally done? Old oil fired furnace so no fancy controls availabe. to split zones.

Ayuh,...... The t-stat is supposed to be centrally located, but not near any heat outlets,....

Maybe move yer's to across the room, or into a hallway, maybe the kitchen,..??

My thermostat is a bit over 20' away from our gas burning fireplace and when we're hanging out in our great room and running it the rest of the house definitely cools down.

Move the thermostat if you can or location of fireplace. Is the gas fireplace going in an existing fireplace box?

Our old house was zoned upstairs and downstairs but had a similar problem. Upstairs t-stat was in the hallway. The wood stove downstairs would heat up the hallway and the upstairs zone would shut off and the bedrooms would freeze. I relocated the t-stat to the master BR. It's pretty easy to put the thermostat on a long wire and try it out in other places.

I can relocate the T-stat easily enough. I like the idea of putting it on a longer line and try some spots. I will do that, as with brick walls it is a chore to get it run once location is decided.

Central location is in living room now, but due to that is why I want the stove there also.

We do not have a fireplace currently, home never had any. Back in the day it had freestanding potbelly stoves as far as I can tell. No masonry chimney except from basement.
