Furring strips for insulation

What kind of furring strips would you use to hang 4'x8' insulation on the walls? I have a pole barn with 7.5' OC columns. I could hang the sheets horizontally and use some kind of furring strips, but I'm not sure what would be best. Trying to keep the cost down because the barn is big. Either wood 1"x2"? Or it seems like some kind of thing metal strips would be easiest to attach to the column.

Any ideas?

It depends what you are doing with it... If you will NEVER hang anything from the walls or need to cover it, I would glue it only with no furring strips. If you need to hang a finished wall over it, at least 1X2s would work or whatever the thickness of the insulation is.

If you're using foam board run 2 or even 3" metal studs verticly 24" on center± 3 studs between each pair of posts and screw the insulation up with spangles on the screwheads.
The labor you save with metal -v- wood will make up any cost diffeerential on metal -v- wood studding, and the metal stud is stronger for your purpose.

Thanks guys. I hadn't thought about how I'd hang things on up after the insulation was on. :headscrat I'll use one some kind of metal or wood stud for those areas.

But my barn is 15' high and I won't be hanging anything up high. So what about some kind of metal strapping to hold the insulation up where I don't need to hang anything. I could glue it, but I'd like to be able to remove if needed (although I have no idea why I would need to remove it.)
I was thinking something in a coil with holes in it, such material exists right?

Thanks.

I ran romex inside conduit in my shop but there are no joints because the wire is exposed in the ceiling and the conduit is only from the top plate on the wall down to the surface mounted box.

Ben the metal strapping you are looking for is plumbers strap you can also lengthen metal studs pretty easy by screwing them together to reach 15' if that would work easier .

Ben, how many feet of strapping do you figure you'll need?

If you can live with a little luffing of the wall, you can get a roll of 1½ wide steel strap that's normally used on lumber loads, and drop it from the top down to the bottom. A few screws at the top will secure the strap, and you can minimize the luffing by attaching substraps where it passes the wall purlins.

It ain't exactly conventional thinking, but it will get the job done fairly cheap.

Franz, I have about 160 sheets of insluation to hang.
I think I'll go with studs on the lower area, and see how that goes. Then I'll decide to either keep going with studs on higher (8'-15') areas or try the metal banding.

With the stud approach. Are you guys suggesting I hang the studs then cut the insulation to fit between the studs? if so, what keeps the insulation from falling out? Just fit it tight?

This may not work, but they make hangers for blanket insulation, looks like it would work on foam board. It's basically a spike that adheres to the sheathing of the building and spikes the insulation in place, usually has a round locking tab to fit over the spike to get the insulation in place. Here's a website showing a picture- I don't know anything else about the site.

A lot of how you begin hanging the insulation is determined by what your final goal is. If the insulation itself will be the final wall, I'd just stud between the posts, and bring the face of the stid flush with the post. I'd then place the insulation with some adhesive and use a few spangles & drywall screws, at least temporarily to secure the boards to the studs & posts.
