Fused Disconnect?

I am looking to use a disconnect (like for an air conditioner) as a switch for my 5hp (22 amp) 220 volt compressor. All that I can find for 30 amps are ones that are fuseable. Why would I need a 30 amp fused disconnect if I already have a 30 amp breaker dedicated just to the compressor?

Just get a Non fused disconnect.

I couldnt find a non fuseable disconect and was pressed for time so I got a fused one. It cant hurt, but my fuse is a 30 amp and my breaker is a 25.
So im pretty much running a fuseless disconnect if you know what I mean .

Buy a smaller fuse.

He doesn't use the fuse. The breaker is the safety. A 25 amp fuse may blow before the breaker and then he's gotta buy more fuses.

Just get a non fused 60 amp.

He didn't seem to like the fact his fuses were bigger than the breaker. The solution is to buy a smaller fuse.

Interesting, I didn't read it that way at all. I assumed that it was intentional and wondered why he didn't go with a 50a fuse to make sure it was an unfused switch in this application.

never said I didnt like it, doesnt bother me at all and theres nothing wrong with it since the unit has a 25 amp breaker in the panel . I was just giving the o.p. some insight .

As long as you do not need a fused disconnect, simply shunt the fuse holders with

pieces of copper pipe. Voila, non fused disconnect, and no worries about the fuses

getting old and decrepit...

This poor advice, use the correct disco or buy dummy fuses, but the latter will cost a lot more then buying a non-fusible disco. (Non-fusible should be less then $10).

Bussman makes dummy fuses. The 30A fuses are fine IMHO, just leave it as-is.

The answer is you don't NEED a 30 amp fused disconnect if it is already protected by a 25 amp breaker. You might need a disconnect at the compressor area if your direct line of sight to the breaker panel is obstructed. This way if you are working on the compressor, you shut off the disconnect and have no worry about another person turning on the breaker causing you injury.......IMO.
