Gable end lean to

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and have searched hi and low for an answer to my questions. Hopefully this hasn't already been addressed but I am getting ready to add a lean to (roughly 24' long by 12' wide) to the gable end of my pole barn.

What I am trying to figure out is where to attach the board that will support the rafters at the pole barn side should attach to. It is steel sided, and of course, being the gable end, there is no board that runs the length of the building. I should mention that the back part of this lean to will be closed in with a door into the pole barn, it will be a makeshift office/cigar smoking room. Should I instead drop posts along the gable side of the barn to support the header as well as lag the header to the posts of the pole barn? Should I cut the steel the length and width of the header board so that it sits flush against the plywood of the barn?

Again, I apologize if this has been sorted out before but I can seem to only find pictures of what I am trying to accomplish without explanations of how it is done. Thanks in advance!

I'll be building a gable end lean-to this summer/fall. At least I hope to.

Since I'm dealing with a vinyl sided building, my original plan was to just do a 2x8 ledger board attached to the existing studs in the garage. However, I decided that I will end up doing a stand alone attached one. It would be more weight on the wall of my garage, "stand alone" is less likely to get me in any sort of trouble for expanding a structure

With that said, I'm also going with stand alone because I eventually plan on adding a rear garage door to the garage for better yard access. There was one before and I'd like to have one again.

how are you planning to flash the new to the old?

You will need to cut and or remove the siding at the header area to flash under your current siding, so it makes the most sense to remove it, add your header and frame from there.

Just as you would do if new construction.

I would cut the siding and flash up underneath it to the new roof. This is, of course, if I can attach the ledger board to the existing building

You will need a ledger capable of carrying half the roof load between the posts.

In other words it will probably be the same size beam that you need out at the eve end of the lean to.

Right, I’m just curious if I should attach that ledger board to the last truss on the gable end of my barn And if that would be adequate for the weight of the roof, or should I drop posts up against the pole barn to support that ledger as well

Since is a pole barn you may have to add a ledger or notch one in your vertical posts. Yes its more work to notch one in but your then not relying on hardware keeping your roof attached to your building.
