Hello everyone, I am in the process of having a 24' by 32' Pole barn built, I have the option of either using Galvalume or Galvanized for the siding and roof. Any help on this would be appreciated, what would be the best to use and why, thanks in advance.

I would have to imagine the galvalume is going to add considerable expense. Painted galvanized panels last a long time, I can't see the added expense for a pole barn. Just my opinion.

I had a 24x40 pole barn built in 1987. I went with painted steel siding and a Galvalume roof. After 33 years, there are no signs of rust on the roof, or on the painted siding. Had a 10' sliding door on one end and an 8' on the other, along with a separate walk-in door.

I shopped around at the time and found the best deal in NW Pa. Bottom line was $4600.00 , but those days are long gone. The work took 2 days. The company that built it, had crews that worked in 3 states. ----- John

From my understanding.....Galvalume is coated Galvanized Steel.

My 25x25 pole barn was built in 1970 & the Galvanized roof panels are starting to rust, The wall panels have no rust at all. Interesting fact....The panels have Made In Japan stenciled in ink on the inside.

I recently built a 30x40 shop using Galvalume R-Panel....Too early to tell.

Galvalume has a standard warranty of 20 years. Warranty that hot dipped aluminum-zinc alloy coated Galvalume sheet steel, sold for use as unpainted or substrate for pre-painted metal panel and trim, will not rupture, fail structurally or perforate within a period of 20 years. Wall panels will last longer due not getting full water on them for longer periods of time. For appears, a color panel would look better on the walls.

You can get Galvanized G60 & G90 in "B" decking and some farm type panels but most steel building panels are Galvalume Plus 22, 24, 26 & 29 ga. material. 22 ga. is the heaviest to thinner 29 ga. material. Weight equal more money.

About twenty years ago, I re-roofed my house with galvalume. The material was available in various colors, but I just bought the unpainted stuff.

The house is at 8500 ft above sea level, which means UV exposure can harm some roofing materials or coatings, such as paint.

So far, there is no degradation to my roof, no discoloration from weather exposure.

About the time I did the roof, I also did several sheds with the generic "barn roof" galvanized sheets. There are a few small rusty places, but they are not structurally problematic. There has also been discoloration. If that matters to you.

I have no experience with the painted galvalume, so I don't know whether it fades.
