Galvanized rebar

I picked up a bunch of short sticks of galvanized, rebar Restore.

I vaguely recall many years ago that there was a problem with epoxy coated rebar. Something about pinpoint corrosion and catastrophic failure. I think they were defects in the epoxy and it let moisture through at one point and all the corrosion took place at that point.

Anyway, are there any issues I need to be aware of with this galvanized stuff?

Or can I just run it like regular rebar?

How short are the pieces you have? While there is no inherent risk to using galvanized rebar, there is literally no benefit either in residential construction. Splicing together a bunch of short pieces would be a PIA and be more difficult to support. An average splice length would be something like 40 bar diameters or 20" for a #4 bar. This can eat up a lot of bar.

If was free, maybe it would be worth it but don't do it because you think you need more corrosion protection, you don't.

Thanks. Good to know. I got around 25 pieces of 4’ #4 bar for $20. Convenient because I could stick it in my jeep and it will be going into 2’x2” square form. Happens to work out for me.

+1 on the above. The only constructive use I have found for lengths of rebar like this is as pegs for landscape ties.

Corrosion protected rebar has a place for bridges, some small applications for roadways and not a whole lot else.

Corrosion protected bars are for structural applications. Rebar placed in normal pavements sitting on the ground is NOT structural. (Its only there for crack control.)

I agree they are best for pinning landscape timbers.

Corrosion protected bar is also good for **** plants and lift stations.
