Galvannealed steel ?

I called a local shop for prices on 18ga 4x8 steel for patch panels.

Raw steel was about what I was expecting in price.

They said they also had a "weldable galvannealed steel". I know about the warnings against galvanized. What is galvannealed steel and is it safe to weld?

Galvannealed or galvanneal is the result from the combined process of galvanizing and annealing the steel. The galvanization is made through the hot-dipping (Hot-dip galvanizing) process and gives a very fine greyish matte finish. Galvanneal does not flake off its galvanized coating when formed, stamped, and bent. The very fine matte finish acts like a primer, easily adheres to paint, and is very rust proof; only white to dark grey marks appear if it comes in contact with water. Galvanneal sheets offers good paintability, weldability, corrosion resistance, and formability. It is extensively used in the automotive, signage, electric equipment, and other industries requiring a metal with good paintability and long reliable service life. This steel process is produced by many steel mills and it is commonly referred by its trade name of Jet-Kote.

He had advised I would have to use a good primer on it.

Difference in price was $30.

First of all disclaimer 'I know nothing' and have little to no experience here. However I will jump in anyway. Welding will burn off (?) the galvanized coating in the area of the weld. If your making small patch panels then I would think that the benifit of coated metal would be small to none as the weld area is going to rust without treatment. So for small stuff probably not worth it. Larger panels may be, are you in a rust prone environment?

I am building front left and rear right floor pans for an old car. Bottom will be primed and sealed. Tops will be primed and painted.

The rest of the 4'x8' will be used for small patches < 6"x6" on other rotted areas on my two projects.

I think I will stick with the raw steel. In my search I found conflicting rules about welding galvanized/galvannealed steel and I can't move the big project outside where I can get good air circulation.

I would not use galvanized jsut for the fact its hazardous to weld .. its not worth getting sick.
