Gambrel Trusses: Do scissor types exist?

Hoping to have a garage built with half attic and half scissor gambrel trusses. These would give me the needed 12' min height requirement for 2 Post lift without having tall walls. Do these exist like I see on sheds or am I just dreaming? (see pic)

Have you been to Curtis or Williams lumber, and shown them that picture?

Only way to know for sure is take the pic to a local truss company. Not all truss builders offer all types or custom engineering.

I know those are available in my area but maybe not in the span you will need.

Just as an idea to get a look at some is to go to barnplans.com They have what looks like great plans and several different sizes along with head clearance diagrams.
I’m seriously thinking of building a 32 x 40 or 48 barn.

Again, why not use conventional framing and no trusses! May cost a little more but you will get what you want.

I emailed them about this, I'll see what they say. Thanks for the info.

Gambrel roofing was always “scissor”. That’s its nature and purpose. At some (modest) building size it becomes a stick building exercise due to enormity.

I'll second barnplans. I built a 28 x 48 to their plans. IIRC, at least half of the building has to have a loft to provide the necessary shear strength. One third of mine is open. The plans also call for rods across the open area to prevent the walls from spreading; not sure how that would work with a lift.

On Menards website, they have a truss calculator showing different designs. Even if there are none in your area, you could still build them and get a price.

Another thought. Have you considered building it like a monitor barn, but raising the peaks of the wing roofs up to the eaves of the center roof, to get the look of a gambrel? Then you could use a lot of standard trusses.

I think the local AG departments have plans, specs for building your own gambrel trusses.

I looked up images and it's an interesting idea, I'll run that by the Mrs.

Any truss manufacturer should be able to quote & build that. It does get difficult to ship once you get past 12' wide.

I built my 24x44 garage with Gambrel trusses for the upper level for the barn look. Mine span 24' . They came as a 2 piece. Brackets included. Nailed together . Had them delivered right on the upper subfloor. All engineered and certified. I have about 11' at the highest part. I can add more pics if you need. Just what I had handy Garage Deck (13).jpgGarage Siding (5).jpg

To add I put them all by hand with one other person. With ropes and braces. Was not To difficult. The bases just fit into a horizontally mounted joist hanger to hold them in. Worked great

For those who've never seen one, that is what a stick built gambrel barn also looks like. The shape was invented to allow the interior to be totally open.

If that roof was on top of the walls, that could be perfectly normal in a barn, but you might have an extra triangle involving the wall itself.

Just spoke with "Dano" from barnplans. Great guy. The showcase pages of the website have several good examples. I was happy to learn that I can have a clear floor attic space AND clear span garage. Do you have a pic of your garage area? Thanks for pointing me in his direction...

My 30x40 is built exactly like this to accomidate a lift. I have a 15x30 bay with the high ceiling fo a lift, and a loft over the remainder. I don't have any drawings or photos of the bare trusses though, I don't think. 2d9cf4f996214fd41c0a8b8a9274dd5d.jpg
