Gap between drywall and Header

While I was replacing the the garage door wearables(springs, cables, drums, bearings, rollers) I noticed that there is a big gap between the drywall and header.

I am unsure what to use as it will be both touching wood and sheetrock. Now if the gap was smaller, i would of just caulked and be done with it. But the excessive gap presents other problems, product shrinking, durability, sandability, paintability concerns.


Does anyone have any ideas how I would go about prepping this before I prime and paint the walls?

I can't see the photo on this CPU. How big is the gap? Maybe cut a small piece of sheetrock to place in there if it is big enough.

i'd just caulk the heck out of it best you can. drywall mud with all that vibration is probably going to be an issue if you filled that space with it. If it bothers you that much put in a new piece of drywall.

I have a similar issue and I will be using a simple crown molding. it's also one less seem you have to tape if you do it.

edit: if you mean the garage door header... that is another story, but if you want a "finished" look that will stay it should also be done with some sort of wooden trim

I can't see the photo either but if the gap is too big for caulk, then I'd be looking at putting a strip of drywall and finish accordingly.

Use a strip of drywall measured to fit and glue in place. Light coat of mud and sand as normal prep.

Is the drywall even with the vertical 2x? If not and you have room, just add a piece of quarter round. If it is even, fill the gap with a little Durock then some compound. Sand and finish

Mine was the same when the drywall guys left me to finish it. Because its above the door and not really all that visible, I used backer rod and caulking prior to painting.

They make a foam rod that you can push into the gab and caulk over. I believe they call it "backer rod".
