gap between foundation and drywall

Hi, I would like to finish my garage, and part of that job includes putting up some vinyl cove along the foundation to meet with the drywall.

Unfortunately, at the back, the concrete foundation is about an inch or two away from the drywall. So Im not sure how to seal this off in a neat way.

Any ideas? See cross section below.

By the looks of the drawing it looks like you have two choices. Cut back the insulation so it is flush with the drywall and the foundation, then install the cove. Or build out the drywall with wood so it is flush with the insulation then install the cove.

Well if I cut back the insulation, it would just drop into the basement. Redoing all the drywall would be a big pain..

If there was a way to extend the foundation, so that it goes under the drywall, that would be ideal....but I know nothing about concrete. It wouldnt need to be strong.

The only low effort thing I can think of that might work would be just angling the vinyl cove at that section. So that it would cover the gap. It would be siliconed to the concrete and drywall.

I guess I am not following you fully. Is this foam insulation? It looks from your pic that you could just notch the insulation a little and still be isolated from the basement.

its batt insulation, I am not sure what you mean. Between the drywall and the edge of the foundation, there is a sheer drop to the basement interior. It just has some insulation sheets against the basement interior wall. Insulation should probably just be ignored for what Im looking to do tbh.

I guess another option would be to simply add another layer of drywall onto the existing layer.

Isn't there OSB or plywood covering the outside of the garage? Under the siding?

I guess yet another option could be screwing some short 2x4s to the wall and drywalling around that. Basically make the drywall step out 3" at the bottom of back wall.

There was initially a 2x4 caulked up and covering the gap but Im not happy with that long term.

Probably your best option. But make lemonade out of lemons. Build some shallow storage. Many ways to use shallow storage.

Any examples of the shallow storage? I hadnt really considered that - was only planning on making the step 10" tall or so

What would be the best way to secure the new studs to the existing drywall? Im going to orient them the wrong way to make it shallower. Im not sure if i should glue onto the sheetrock, or screw into the studs behind the existing drywall.
