After being in my home (purchased new) for almost 10 years, I felt it was time (and with a lot of positive pressure from a good friend) to overhaul my unfinished detached garage.

Over the years I had made accommodations in the unfinished space, but I had always known those to be temporary. So I refer to those minor improvements as Garage 1.1, 1.5 etc. :)

The name “Garage 2.0” - this is the starting over and doing it exactly as I want.

I've now put about three months into the project, but working full time+ and doing all of this work alone on weekends and evenings, I guess I am good with progress / timing thus far.

Along the back of the garage, I have built a 4 x 12 lean-to. Originally, I planned this to be smaller (4 x 4 or 4 x 8). It houses my air compressor and vac. I then thought to make it 12' and also use it as a "parking spot" for the mower and outdoor equipment. This works well since the compressor and vac are stationary fixtures in the back of the space.

I began this project in Sketch-Up and drafted a general idea of reworking the space, yet much has changed in what may be considered a “design-(as-you-go)-build”

I mentally split the rebuild into three phases: I – Lean-To build, II – everything “behind the scenes”, and III – completing the interior build out post drywall.

Phase I and II are coming to completion as I set out to start and complete drywall over the next week that I have taken vacation. I see questions from time to time such as "what all should I do / add while building my garage / shop. The following list details everything that has gone into phases I and II that I wanted:

Three more pictures. Things should look much different soon. That includes having drywall up and not so much mess everywhere. The worst part about all of this is setting up temporary storage (anywhere it can be created) for all of the "stuff" that had to come out to make space to work.

Nice start to great garage. I also bumped out the back of my garage for the compressor and yard ****. Mine is not completely closed in though. I used plywood for my walls and painted it white. It is a lot stronger than drywall. Drywall is only required if the garage is an attached one. Keep the photos and stories coming!

How did you go about sealing the lean to against the house?

Are you asking based on the garage's siding (and it not being flat)? Where the lean-to meets up with the garage, it is trimmed with roughly a 1x2. Then I applied and filled the zig-zag gapping with acrylic caulk.

Is that some sort of condenser mounted on the wall behind the compressor? I assume for water removal from the air line?

Thats good to know. I was more referring to how you are sealing the roof of the lean to up against the house.
