Here is the start of my garage upgrade. I have been gathering information and checking the forum regularly since I stumbled across it a year ago. I figure I should start a thread to track the progress (as slow as it might be) of the upgrade. It will also give me a reason to take more pictures and document things better.

We bought our house in June of 2013 in Saskatchewan, Canada and not much has changed in the garage. I was very excited to go from having no garage at our old house to have a triple (I call it a 2 plus 1) garage. So far, I have rebuilt the landing coming from the house so that it didn't obstruct the vehicle parking as much, added some storage on the one wall, and filled it with stuff!

Recently I have started moving some stuff around, trying to get everything in its permanent place. This has included relocating a home-built shelving unit that came with the garage and finally wall mounting a free TV I scored.

Future plans include:
- More shelving
- Work bench
- Adding some type of sound system
- Installing a sub-panel
- Adding additional power and lighting throughout the garage
- Insulating and boarding the garage
- Adding a heater for the cold Saskatchewan winters
- Paint
- Some type of finish on the floor

Here is a recent street view picture (after we did the driveway and some landscaping) and the before pics from the MLS listing before we moved in.

I'll take some pictures of where it is at today and post those soon.

Here are some recent pictures of the garage loaded up with our stuff. Not much has changed from the before pictures. I moved the shelf that the previous owner left behind to the front wall of the garage, built a little mezzanine, and built a landing coming out of the garage. I have hung a fair bit of stuff on the wall, but it's mostly all temporary at this point.

Next up is the install of some new shelving in the back section!

Shelving Install
Target Canada is shutting down and they are selling off all of their fixtures. I was able to buy 20 4' shelves and 9 wall brackets to hold them. Total cost was only $130! They also came with lighting to go over them but I haven't figured out how to incorporate them yet as the way they are designed they will block the top shelving.

Not all of the shelving is up. But it was a good start. At this point the goal was to just get the shelving up and the stuff off the floor that came off of the shelving unit I moved previously. The next step will be to actually organize everything.

Before:

After:

These are the lights that came with them. There are seven 4' sections so a total of 28'.

Nice project. Very envious of the room you have in there. Nice to see you were able to score some useful pieces from Target. I went when they first announced and it was lines 30 people deep for 10% off lol..

Very neat arrangement. In Texas they call that a 3 car tandem garage but most do not have that back door! I also like the motorcycle loft.

I have been doing some modeling in Sketchup to layout items and try color schemes. I am still fairly new at it, but every time I open it up it seems to get more and more detailed. Here is the most recent version.

Stereo Upgrade

Scored a home theatre system for $20, so I bought some cheap speaker mounts (4 for $16) and hung them last night. Not super loud, but for $20 the price was right. I ran the speaker wire on the ceiling for now, I will have to go in the attic to wire in extra lighting and a ceiling fan, so I will run the speaker wires when I do that.

Nice.....How did you come up with Garage 357?

I ask, as I came up with Garage 732 for mine. 732 is my area code.

Those repurpose shelves are awesome and had same idea. I worked in a store when I was young and they did a whole store remodel. The threw all the old fixtures out. Fast foward 10 years and I get a house and now many store pack them all up and take them away.

I can't believe it has been over a year since I last updated this. It is a little discouraging to see how little has changed over a year, but things have been moving the last few weeks. Since the last update I have added more shelving, started building a workbench and updated the stereo system.

This weekend the goal was to clean up the partially built workbench so that it is actually usable and go through a couple of miscellaneous buckets of stuff. I made the mistake of throwing a temporary top on it which just allowed me to cover it in junk.

The buckets were a catch-all from our previous house reno and had all sorts of stuff in them. Here what one of the bucket looked like initially:

And after:

One bucket for painting supplies and one for tiling supplies.

Here is what the bench area looked like before:

And after.

I actually shortened the base of the bench. The top will be 8 feet long and will extended 13" on one end for a bench vise I have and 22" on the other to go over the beer fridge (which I had been trying to find a spot for). The idea is to get rid of the larger fridge and free up that floor space.

Work has continued on the workbench. It was really meant to be a quick basic project but has evolved into something more complicated than I initially planned.

To make the workbench top strong enough to support the 13" quick release bench vise I bought, I decided to go with a 3" laminated top made from standard 8' 2x4 lumber. I cherry picked the best 2x4s I could from Home Depot and because I don't have a jointer, I started by planing each one down using the flattest side available. I then glued it together in 3 sections and sent them back through the planer on the planed side. After that it was more planing to get the 3 sections even and then I glued the 3 pieces together. It's not perfect but for the price and the purpose I am pleased with how it turned out. Still some fine tuning left but I have a sturdy work surface now.

I also picked up a couple of retractable hose reels off of Kijiji for $25 each. The one spring wasn't winding so I took it apart and had to bend and reattach the one end. It's working good as new now. Just need to mount them and put the hoses on.

Did some more organizing this morning using some dividers that came with the shelves. Forgot to get a before picture, but this is a big improvement. Sent about 8 cans of old paint that haven't been touched in 3 years for recycling.
