Anyone experienced with additions where they are attached on 2nd story so there is separation between the 2, 1st story structures? Way our house sits, we want to add a large garage with a 2nd story and have a walkway attached to our current 2nd story. We need that "gap" to enter our backyard from the driveway. Our HOA doesn't allow separate structures.. Thoughts? Any pics? Thanks.

we have a "tunnel" between the garage and house - for exactly the same reason. I think it is really cool, and everyone that sees it thinks it it too. They have never seen anything like it!

I also did the breezeway thing. Not for the second story aspect like yours, but so I could get the roof height for the future carport to accommodate a lift. The rules here say your accessory buildings can't be taller than the house. The garage peak was already a fluke as it was four feet higher than the house. So I joined the garage to the house with a breezeway and it magically became one structure.
