That's pretty cool.

Would be nice to also hook up Smoke Alarm in garage that would do the same.

How could that be done ??

I just used one of the door/window magnetic sensors that came with my home alarm system (from Fortress Security). I could just as easily install a motion detector too.

You could kill two birds with one stone by using a security camera with motion detection that will tie into an alarm system.

The wireless sensors on a Simplisafe system have a 400 ft range. Put a system in your house and add a few sensors for the garage.

probably should make sure it alerts the thief and is not contained in your house

I know we all dream about the day we catch a thief in our garage, but it's just asking for trouble.

Our garage is directly behind our house. Between the garage and the house is a roughly 20'x18' patio area. Then the door from the back of our house leads across the patio to a door to the garage. The car entry door faces the alley.

I bought a motion sensor and alarm from Harbor Freight. The sensor is in the garage and senses motion if the either door is opened.

The alarm module is in the house. If someone enters the garage you'll know it. I cover the sensor with masking tape when I'm working in the garage so that it doesn't drive my wife crazy. :) The alarm does have a switch to turn it off, though.

Harbor Freight Item#93068 I think it cost me $11 and I have had it 2 years.

Will the false alarms, and you will get them, be a burden to your neighbors.

If the system goes into alarm, and you are not there to turn it off, what happens?

To clarify my previous statement, you could use a automation hub like SmartThings to then setup easy sensors, switches, horns, etc.

When the time comes for me to add more to my garage this is how my setup would look. The links are to examples of the "Things" you would need. I would have the motion sensors turn on/off my garage lights whenever they sense motion by replacing the existing garage light switch with a Z-Wave switch. Then you could add your siren to go off when you are not at home, which would be based off your cell phone being within a range of your home, or a "arrival sensor" which you could attach to your keys or something you always take with you when leaving the house.

From there would be your basic needs to alarm when you are away from home and there's something mucking about in your garage or when you are asleep, which would be based on your presence devices (phone/arrival sensor) being home and the time of day is say... between 10pm and 6am. You can also have it send your phone alarms if you are in say... Italy so you can then notify your nearest neighbor or the authorities, before you do that I would suggest adding a camera so you know it's not something like a mouse running around.

Someone mentioned adding a smoke or CO alarm, well they have those too which again can send you alerts that your house is burning down.

Or if you wanted get really crazy like we do at my work, which is for a building automation/access control company, you can add door switches to detect if the motion sensor is being tripped because someone has gained access to the garage from the outside. There's also garage door sensors that can be used to determine if your door is open or not.

I would NOT suggest adding any remote unlocking/locking or garage door opening device to the system. I feel like that is just asking for some trouble by allowing people to have the keys to your house.
