I am 57 yrs old and in the process of an unwanted divorce[she wants it] My daughter lives 90 miles away My plans are at closer to retirement to buy some land close or next to my daughter and build a 40x60 pole building with a20x40 apt with abedroom and a kitchen/ living room combo with bath and laundry/ utility and then sell the house, shop and land I know live in. Xwife can't get it, it was mine before we married and her name was not on it. Anybody know where to look for ideas on floor plans and room size ideas.

Is that a 40x60 building plus a 20x40, or a 40x60 where 1/3 is living area and the rest shop?
Either way, that would be plenty of space for me.
To keep cost down, back up the bathroom to the kitchen and put the utility room next to it so all the water is in one area. Also ensures fast hot water.
The living room/dining/kitchen open area is a good way to save space. My father in law has that combo at his lake place and just has some counter-height stools at an island instead of an actual dining table. Another way is to put the washer and dryer in a closet off a hallway, hidden behind bi-fold doors or a pair of normal doors to keep it quieter.
You probably still have enough space for a bedroom in addition to an office/second bedroom for guests.

Be aware that some local governments do not allow "garage apartments" or as in my county, you cannot erect a accessory structure before the residence is built. Poor county but they act like we are worth a billion or two.

Biggest consideration will be required firewalls/fire doors, etc, between living space and shop/garage space and exterior emergency egress.

It is 40x60 with 1/3 living and it will be in the country so no restrictions. I am thinking put the bathroom,utility/ laundry, closet in the middle. Thanks for all help!
