While I figure out what to do about building a bigger garage, I was hoping to use the lower section of my back deck as an outdoor workshop. I'm looking to erect some shelter to keep the sun and rain off for maybe a year. I would mainly use it for a sandblast cabinet, powdercoat oven, cutting/sanding...Probably string some lighting around...Stuff that could live outside, but would prefer to be out of the rain (just like me).

My first thought was just a pop-up canopy tent. This would do the job, but it got my wheels turning...An awning might give me more shelter, and I wouldn't have to deal with poles...The big ones get pricey, and I can't seem to find one that isn't retractable (not a feature I need). My final thought was to get one or two of those sail canopies, but I'm not quite sure what I would hook some of the eyes to...

I'm hoping to find a slightly nicer solution then screwing a 2x4 post to my deck rail, but it'd work—this is a temporary hack.

Anyone have outdoor shop space that works well and was fairly easy to build?

definitely NOT a pop up tent with all closed sides. Hot as Hades here in summer. can't imagine what LA would feel like.

Any more thoughts on this?

Thinking of getting a metal gazebo myself so things won’t get wet.

Heh, I have lots of thoughts, but I've been occupied by getting my actual garage sorted.

My plan is to attach some pillars (probably just 2x4s) to the corners of my deck, and stretch one or more waterproof "sails" across everything, from my house to the pillars. That maximizes space, keeps the area breezy, and provides more than enough protection for like, a cheap blast cabinet. It might be tough to keep it taught and waterproof, though, as triangles won't give me enough coverage without doubling up, and squares can accumulate water if not sloped fairly aggressively. I have about 9' of height to work with on the house side, sloping down to the yard.

I've also considered just throwing one of those 10x12' sheds back there (no permit needed for under 120 sqft). It would be a bit less spacious, but I could lock stuff up in there, as well as paint and weld without looking as wild to the neighbors.

Por qué no los dos...

Go down to the water front and find a canvas shop.
Most do awnings also and can custom sew one to order.
