for TLDR, skip to the ----------------
Due to an accident in my 2 story house and having a son with special needs, my wife an I decided to sell our home in a neighborhood and build a ranch. We bought 10 acres and configured a large ranch that fits our needs with a custom home builder.
Anyway, I am looking to build a structure similar to the size of a detached garage (20x30, 25x25, 18x35) to serve 3 purposes.
1) workshop
2) place to park my mower and 4 wheeler.
3) corner to let 2 goats in when it is exceptionally cold (this will probably be a separate structure but wanted to throw it out there)
I will want to insulate it and probably put in a wood burning stove. I will run electric and water to it...maybe gas, but definitely not septic. I will also want to add a 16' garage door.
Design concerns
1) We are building a fairly expensive brick home. While I do not want to go overboard on cost, I want to have a structure that I can side with hardie board or similar and with a metal roof (the nicer kind rather than corrugated galvanized steel) or shingle roof of no less than 6/12 pitch. In general, I want it to look in keeping with the design of the house.
2) I will have a poured cement floor
3) Ideally, I would like to do the majority of the work myself with help on occasion for roof framing and such from family or hired hands
-----------------------------
Questions I need help with
1) Can I do this on a slab or is it worth it to do a poured foundation?
2) Is there any issue with having my builder go ahead and pour me a foundation for this while doing my driveway. I would be doing the construction a couple months later.
3) Should I get anchor bolts placed to save me effort drilling for those after the fact.
4) I am fairly experienced with 2x4 framing. Is there any compelling reason to use metal studs for the framing vs wood?
5) Trusses - I will probably just order the trusses online so they come already built. Should I rent a small truck crane to hoist those up or just do it as 2 of us carrying them up ladders?
6) The last thing is that it will take a me a few weeks to do this as I will be doing it mostly in the evenings. Any advice on issues that weather might bring up and should i consider metal studs or treated lumber for framing since they will be exposed to the weather for a while before getting wrapped?
Any advice is REALLY appreciated. Thanks!
