So when my wife and I bought a new house, we bought knowing I planned to build my "dream" garage. We had been in our new house for a couple of years and the talk about "kids" happened and I did what any guy would do..... time to build the garage. So my goal was to get the garage built before we have a kid. Well, it is now the beginning of February and our first child is due on March 13th and I am happy to say, my garage is finished. I will post some pics along the way. The only thing left is the 2 post lift which will be installed in the spring. Enjoy.

The first group of pics is the initial stages of the build. My township has a restriction of 1000 square feet for buildings. If above 1000 sq. ft. it needs an engineering grading plan and dry well, and a list of other things. To keep cost manageable, the garage dimensions are 25'x39'6". It also has 14' ceilings.

These are pics of the floor and garage doors. I had a 6" floor poured to handle the lift. I plan to put a 4-post and a 2-post lift in the end. At this point I am only getting the 2-post. My wife had only one requirement for the garage, it has to match the house. No metal buildings, has to be sided. I put 9x9 doors on the garage too.

I had a ton of electric run. I put a sub panel put in with a large amount of outlets and plenty of 240v lines for air compressors and lifts. I also went with four 8ft. fluorescent lights. This is plenty of light. The builder had finished his part. It was my plan to finish the inside myself. I planned to insulate, sheetrock, spackle, paint, and finish the floor with racedeck flooring. I spent the entire summer working on the garage.

Here are a few pics of the insulation. I used rolls. Then I started sheetrock. I purchased a drywall lift. BEST TOOL EVER for hanging drywall. I did all of this alone. I am not a tall guy. I used 4'x12' sheets and I build a pulley system to lift the sheets onto the lift. I used a winch from harbor freight and some straps.

Next, after finishing the drywall, it was time to mud the garage. Once that was done, it was time for paint. Wanted to do a grey and white theme with yellow and black stripe. (I got ideas from this forum)

After finishing paint and trim, it was finally time for the flooring. I was so excited to put in my new racedeck. They are great at what they do. Their customer services is great as well. Oh and my birthday gift from my wife is on the back wall, a 50" plasma tv. (looks tiny on the huge wall). The last pic is a relaxing pic with my feet up admiring my new garage!

To finish off the project, I got a craftsman toolbox and some cabinets. It is finally finished and my baby (my nova, not the real baby yet) is at home. And there are a few pics with the garage filled up for the winter. Thanks to all of you guys for helping me do this. I have been lurking on this forum for a while now. It was now time for me to contribute with my experience.

That thing is massive. Not to mention, massively gorgeous. It's remarkable how the size of your garage makes your Craftsman stuff look small. Congratulations on your impending arrival. Fatherhood is pretty sweet.

Awesome setup. Very clean and well lit.

That's what I thought too. That one picture from the garage doors make it look like a standard height garage but with tiny tool boxes. Since most horizontal wall stripes are ~belly high, then you look at the tool box and realize the stripe touches the top compartment.

Tell me more about that floor... what happens when you spill something.... do you have to pull up a few squares to get where it seeped in between the pieces?

Your wife must really wanted a baby. Just don't let the kid know the price of their birth was the garage.

It is really nice. I wish I could build one but unless I can buy land from my neighbor, no dice.
I see the upper window, Is there a room up there or is it just for looks? Man cave material?

It is RaceDeck flooring. It is all over this forum. There are plenty of opinions on it. I haven't done too much serious work yet. Just put the ape hangers on my bike. As time will tell, we will see how it holds up.

As for the window, it is strictly for looks. The roof is trusses and there is no room up there for a "man cave". The garage has 14' ceilings, if it had room for am a man cave above, the building would be like 30' high!!!

Great garage! Very ingenious on the lift / pulley system. I have 13' ceilings so I may steal this idea when I begin drywall in a few weeks. I did the reverse, 2 kids (3 and 18 mo), then new to us house then built garage. Wish I did it your way.... Enjoy the garage and fatherhood.

Great job!

I was in a similar situation, we just barely got our house done a month or so before our first kid arrived, unfortunately the garage was just a bare empty space when she arrived, so I'm still trying to find the time to get it organized 4 months later.

Congrats on the kid and the garage!

That looks amazing. May I ask, and I understand if you don't want to share, how much something like that runs? You basically built my dream garage. Just curious what I'd be getting into.
