Just making an updated thread about my garage build from the beginning. I got all the pictures off my phone and onto my pc so I can organize them and make a more organized thread. This is a 30x45 gambrel style garage that will have an apartment up top and shop on the bottom. From nothing to something, then the disasterish encounter with high winds, and the re build.

Considering the time of the year wouldn't you be better off to concentrate on getting a roof up?
I would be yes, however I can't get trusses until the end of January beginning of February and it can get to be -40 or colder that time of year. (I'm not going to be out framing in that) If I knew how to build trusses I would be starting on the second floor but that's something I don't know how to do unfortunately

Since we're asking why would ya questions. Based on what looks like nearly unlimited space, why not adjust the dimensions to the rule of fours? Local regulations? Or some other factor? Just asking, not trying to poke your eye.

Will you cover the building w/ a tarp or something? I know you sealed the flooring but I don't think I'd want the plywood exposed to the weather for that long.

Well it's gonna be rainy again I had the tyvek on and didn't want anything to happen to it so I spent the day putting up siding it was actually pretty fast and fun. Hopefully next week will be less windy so I can snap some lines and get the layout for the second floor ready

Lmao that's a good movie, it's way out in bfe North Dakota. I have random people pulling up all the time and talking to me. It's a bit strange to me being from a bigger city and not knowing my neighbor in an apartment building. But they have good intentions

This is an awesome build thread! I am interested in building a 30x44 gambrel with living space above the garage. If you don't mind me asking how much usable width will you have upstairs and are you using trusses? Thanks in advance

No trusses I'm going to use the I joists then build my walls and cut rafters. I'll lose 4' on each side for the angle of the rafters so the upstairs will be 22x45

Thank you very much for your response. Just a couple other questions. What is your sidewall height? Also what roof pitches are your upper and lower roof going to be? Also cannot wait to see pictures of the building first and second floor. Keep up the great work

Finished up the stairs did the trim around the garage doors also started building the walls for the second floor.

The upper roof is going to be 5/12 pitch
The rafters are cut at the bottom 22.5° then the tops @67.5° idk what pitch that is. As far as wall height in the garage and on the second floor they are precut 92 5/8 studs

If you have any questions during your build reach out anytime

Lugged everything to the second floor today. Those 2x8 rafters are heavy but having the stairs made it easier. Rafter ties nailed in place. Ready to lift walls tomorrow when it's not windy 👏 P_20211104_140111.jpgP_20211105_153134.jpg

Got all the framing up on the second floor
Ordered my trusses they should be here in March then I'm paying a contractor to put those up and brace them and I'll do all the plywood myself. That's gonna to be super fun considering 5/8 just went up to $52 A sheet and I need 60 🤦 lets go brandon

Just from looking at the pictures, are there any trees in North Dakota?
Most of them are in hedge rows for wind breaks for the crops. But then the herbicide they use on the fields kills the trees over time . I've planted in over 1000 poplars on my property but they are only about 5-6 foot tall
