The wife and I upgrading from condo life to a single family home. The areas we are considering are more urban than rural suburbs where the majority of the homes can be defined as cookie cutter" homes, so most likely my vision of creating a path to a separate "workshop in the back yard for my bikes is going to be out of the question. My next thought would be to "add" a small space like the picture below either on the side or back of the house where I can put a few bikes/tool boxes, but not actually require another full garage door.

I know costs can vary, but I am completely new to "homeownership"/construction. Anyone care to guesstimate what a job like this would cost, assuming no catastrophic surprises lol? $5K, $10K, $20K?

I did this very same project, mine was a 6x22 addition. If I remember correctly, mine only cost in the neighborhood of $3500, however I did the finish work myself.

I had a contractor (who has done a lot of work for my family over the years) come in with his crew and do the demo and rough-in construction.
The concrete work was handled by myself and another friend of the family who has been a mason for 30+ years.
Everything else was done myself with help from my wife and father.

It was one of the best things I have done to my garage, aside from my Maxjax.
The biggest hurdle you may face is getting permission from your local building inspector/dept. You might only be able to have a certain amount of 'enclosed storage' on your lot, which in my case, also included a 12x16 shed in the total.
If that is the case, you may be able to pursue a variance to the zoning.

Price would depend on area, and is the house brick? Vinyl side? That may be a big factor.

Get a few quotes and go from there.

Thanks for the info fellas. Sounds like a visit to city hall is in order lol.

97dynaglide I'd be in a similar position, I would need someone to make the initial opening and make the exterior "pretty". I have plenty of favors to cash in with others who are in the trade to finish off the interior :).
