I remember as a kid folding the rear seat down and sleeping on a trip from NY to the UP of Michigan in the 74.

On the garage name, I do speak German, but for a garage name, it doesn't really roll of the tongue of us Americans if it's in full German. That's why I like Karmann Krib so far the best. It's German, VW, and has a good sound.

We're back in business. Talked to the builder yesterday and the trusses showed up today. Only problem is that the truck driver drove off my driveway and got stuck. Took them hours to get him out.

omfg. after a day and a half of being here he still hasn't even moved a truss. All he did was get some of the 12" overhang pieces on the gable ends. There is like no time management at all. annoying.

I had to kick in on the name game. I kept Pirelli stock prices high when I was in my younger years by tearing around in a sweet little GTI.

How about "Deutschland Den?"

Came to mind from the Deutschland grill badge I had on that awesome little veedub.

Deutschland Den isn't bad! :)

And yesterday he put the trusses in place. He was done by 11, then cleaned up and took half a day. Obviously in no hurry to get the job done.

Beetle Werks is pretty cool. I was thinking about something geographic, too. Where I live is on the Helderbergs, which was formerly called the Hellerbergs, but was changed because the original name was based literally from Hell due to the winters that the original settler had to survive (and myself now).

Thanks! With the sheathing on, it's finally starting to look like an actual building. I also got the windows and door delivered.

Electrician is coming tonight to lay out the wiring/lighting and come up with a materials list.

no pics from last night because I was too busy running wires with my electrician, but the roof is done, the back wall is done, and the side wall is close to done. Probably 3 weeks of work left.

Not quite 3 weeks, because we are DONE!! He really did a quality job and put a lot of thought into it. A good example is that he stuffed insulation into the corners before putting the corner metal on. Nothing we talked about. He just did it.

Over the next week I'll be finishing up the electric and getting prices for garage doors.

update: The building inspector won't give me my CO until I put a fence around my pool and build stairs and install alarms for my 2 doors that don't open. I just got a call from the fencer and they will be at my house tomorrow to do the installation. Everything else is done. Once I get my CO, I will insulate and put up either OSB or sheetrock. I'm leaning heavily towards OSB. Garage doors are Haas insulated. Heating has not been decided yet due to the unexpected cost of the fence. It may not happen for this winter.

I still have not decided on a name. Karmann Krib still ranks high due to the Karmann connection of all 3 of my cars in it, but the "krib" sounds too hood. That is 180 degrees from anything I would use or say.

For SURE I love my lighting. And a lot of people that have seen it really like the colors and setup.

Stereo, nothing special. Behringer monitors, Pyle Pro amp:

Got my vehicles in it:

It'll never look like this again!

Here's a photo I took with no white balance adjustment to show how my lighting really looks.

Karmann Kampf would be a good name. I have had my share of Kafers and they were all a struggle at some point. People who don't know German will think it means camp, but it really means struggles or action.

I'm going for Das Buggen Hause with an American translation of BugHouse as in crazy, go nuts.

Nice work, BTW. It looks great!

What have you got planned for the inside?

Karmann Kampf is pretty cool!

The inside will get insulation and OSB on the walls. I hope to reserve the area where the stereo is to be a future winery/meadery. Making mead and wine is a big hobby of mine. But I need to get climate control first! And financially, I need to landscape the back yard before I do anything else for myself.

Have you considered "Old Volks Home"?

Great garage. I'm envious.

I briefly worked in a VW shop in college. One of the funniest things I ever saw was "bench testing" a 1600 dual-relief on the bench. Literally! Just hooked up gas, a battery, a cut-down bell-housing with a starter and fired it up. Just sat there on the bench rumbling away. Very cool. I kept my copy of John Muir's How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive and have a poster of Toolaremia...

I think we have a winner! It is The Old Volks Home! That's something that other people will understand. :D Though I do like Karmann Kampf myself.

The story of the VW engine is one of the reasons I like VWs. The engines are so easy. There is an $80 device that acts as a starter mount and battery connection to start the engine out of the car. Cool stuff.

Thanks! The porch was the best idea. Not only to hang out by the pool, but to have a general area that is facing the back yard and is covered. Maybe have some winter firewood storage there.

It was the builder who recommended the 2-tone siding. Easy to replace damaged lower section plus it looked better. Extra cost was only $200 on the whole garage.

If you are happy with the builder, would you mind giving his name? I'm not very far from the Helderbergs and will be building in the Spring. Thanks.

I am very happy with the price and quality. It was a fixed price job and he wasn't cutting corners or trying to rush. Not too happy that he said 4 to 5 weeks should be doable, but ended up taking over 3 months. With that caveat, I'm taking the long term approach that for the next 40+ years I won't care that he was so far off on schedule, but I will care about the quality of the garage. He really only made 1 mistake, which I mentioned to him before it was too late and he jumped on it and fixed it. I wanted a second conduit through the foundation, which he forgot about but went and got it in before the concrete arrived. We all make a mistake here and there and the way he handled it was great. All the lines on the garage are near perfect. He worked with my electrician on putting in the fixtures. The concrete work is exceptional. He treated this project as if it was his own.

He is Josh Schaufelberg and his company is Schaufelberg Construction and Concrete. He's near Amsterdam.
