Garage builds ?

I'm just about to start building my new shop. I'm going to build a 30x40x14 with lean twos off each side one to store tractors etc. and one to park my fifth wheel camper. I have been to look at some friends shops and searched a ton online and am left with a few questions.

One thing I really cant decide on is one or two bay doors. I plan on putting a two post lift but also need room to fit a dump truck at times. I originally thought one 16' door in the center but now I'm having second thoughts.

Also I wasn't quite sure how wide to make the lean twos. I thought 10' should be fine.

Any input or pictures of shops similar to my idea would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Re: Garage build ?s

One thing you might consider is how tight it will be getting the 5th wheel into a 10 ft wide lean-to. I have backed a lot of large enclosed trailers and campers through 10 ft wide shop doors, and it can be very tight and nerve racking. Plus, once you get it parked, it can be difficult to open the camper door. You can also forget about any slide outs being extended in a 10 ft wide bay.

If it were me, I would measure the width of the camper with the slide outs extended and add a couple feet. This would give you the most flexibility with the available space.

As bare minimum, I would at least make sure I am wide enough to open the camper door and maneuver in and out without hassle. You will quickly begin to dislike having to hook up and drag the camper out every time you want to get into it. Personally I don't think 10 ft is wide enough for a 5th wheel. Just some thoughts for you.

I agree that the bigger you go is better than smaller, limited by your budget and space available. This goes for the doors as well, once installed there is no going larger w/o big expense.

I really didn't think into all that. The slide out is 3' and the camper is probably 6' so maybe I should go more like 14'.

Another thing I need to figure out is the height. If the ceiling height for the shop is 14' then depending on the pitch of the roof I don't know what the height will end up being in the lean two.

Side sheds coming off of a 14 foot building are probably not going to be tall enough for a 5th wheel trailer. You need to draw the sheds out to scale and check for yourself.

My barn is this same basic design and I set it up for "normal" height vehicles on the sides and if I ever get a 5th wheel or semi then it will go in the main building where I have a 14 foot tall door.

Draw to scale using graph paper or better yet use CAD to design it. There are less eraser shards on the paper with CAD ;)

Put in 2 doors, that way your car on the lift will never be blocked in by the dump truck.

While you are at....be sure to measure the height of you RV. Often the specs do not match actual height. Just cost me $$$ to buy new low profile AC unit so I didn't have to let the air out of my tires....all could have been prevented if I didn't assume the specs to be correct.

I have a 30 x 40 with 12 foot ceilings, I put an 11 foot high overhead door on the gable end and a smaller overhead door of the side of the building. This same type of layout might work for your situation......I plan to add a lean-to on one side later on for the same purpose so I will be curious to see what you end up with.

Re: Garage build ?s

Thanks for all the help. I have decided on two bay doors for sure.

As for the side sheds I'm trying to figure that out right now. Here is a few pictures I found online that give an idea what I want but I don't know the height on any of them. What do you think the roof pitch of these is?

You can do a two pitch roof as well. This would give you a steeper pitch on the main building, and a shallower pitch on your side ports. Ask your building designer/manufacturer about this option if it is something you think you would be interested in. It would allow for more room in your side ports without making the main building rediculously tall.

That style is called a "monitor barn".

Re: Garage build ?s

well after many drawings and considering I live in VT with a ton of heavy snow so I need a fairly steep roof pitch I might scrap the idea of the camper fitting under the lean two

Re: Garage build ?s

I'm building something similar right now, but plan to keep my camp trailer inside. Building is 40X44, plus the overhangs are 10' between the wall and the poles. Roof pitch is 4/12. 12' high walls built on about 19" of poured wall. It's a bit over 10' high under the overhangs. Doors are 10w X 12h. You'd have to go another 3' higher to fit, or a bit less if you had open ends.

Re: Garage build ?s

So i finally got started. I decided on 32x40x14 with 12' overhangs and a 5/12 pitch roof. The plan is to do 2x6 framing with metal siding and spray foam insulation. The slab with have radiant but for this winter i will be using a wood stove. Here's some pictures of the progress. We hope to have the slab done next week.

Wow, do you not have to pour footings down in the ground there? I would think it gets pretty cold there...
