Garage Cabinets and Organization

I recently modified the exterior of my home including my garage and also installed a beautiful epoxy floor. I now want to start looking at cabinets, shelving and racks. Can anyone recommend a good brand of cabinets and shelving that they've used? I am not looking to hire a company like Garage Tek who will come out and design and install everything for you. I am referring to cabinets such as Gladiator that I can buy myself and install. I am also not opposed to buying online either and live in Frederick Maryland.

Thanks for any suggestions and recommendations

Have you considered getting the unfinished cabinets they have at Lowes or Home Depot? I remodeled our kitchen and reused the old cabinets in my garage. I was able to have a 24' span of upper and lower cabinets.

I like Jon's idea. I have been considering going the unfinished cabinet idea myself and staining. The cost isn't too bad either. I'm still going back and forth on whether I want metal for durability and resistance to chemical leaks though.

I went with Gladiator 30" units and have been very happy with them. You can get them on sale for around $90-100 a few times a year from Sears. Black Friday will probably be the next time they go on sale again.

your real decision is metal vs wood/composite.

Wood cabinets are really nice, but if you do a lot of messy work, they can stain, ship, etc. Metal can be stronger, but not always. They do clean up easier than the wood.

I went with CL kitchen cabinets and cut them to a standard height or shimmed to that height and then painted the faces. I used solid core doors for counter top, and have stained them and followed that with polyurethane on most, and some West System epoxy on the rest, where I knew I would be hard on them.

You could always do a combination of wood and metal. Have a dedicated "messy" section of cabinets/bench that's metal and save the money on the rest using wood.

My current bench tops are wood and I use a large drip pan I picked up from WallyWorld when doing messy work. They are 25" x 47" and evidently Made in the USA (just noticed as I was measuring). I think they were around $10-$12ea. when I bought them.

For cost effective I used wood cabinets from the same people that did our kitchen. I'm not sloppy with liquids or chemicals, & the mess is usually handled on the bench top before storing. For anything that might leak I store it in the base cabinets & in those locations I tile the bottom of the cabinet. We do the same in all sink cabinets in the house. All sinks will eventually leak. An undetected leak will ruin the bottom of a cabinet pretty quickly. Tile on the bottom of the cabinet goes a long way to preventing that damage.

It depends on what you want and the look you want. When I did up the interior of my last garage I went with SlideLok Maple plywood cabinets. You assembled them yourself. I've had them almost 10 years and they still look and function like new. At the time I put these in they were nicer than my kitchen, before I remodeled it, lol. They're actually pretty affordable in comparison to other storage cabinet systems out there. They offer a couple of designs.

Some idea of pricing:

I have a small garage so organization is very important to me. I ended up getting the Gladiator 30" and 24" cabinets, 2 each. They're very high quality, (don't get the RTA line, get the fully welded ones). The benefit over wood cabinets is they will probably withstand the elements better (temperature, humidity, etc.) and with the gear track system, you don't have to nail them to the wall, you nail the gear track to the studs, and hang the cabinets on the track grooves, so if you need to reconfigure the cabinet layout, it's simple as sliding them out.

Can you use slatwall rather than the "gear track"?

Newage cabinets from Costco are nice. Order online and have them delivered.

Pictures?

If you want to add any open shelves, I have been pretty happy with Elfa from the Container Store. Goes on sale twice a year typically and represents a better value than anything I could find anywhere else. Thicker steel and just a better system.

I would put it up against the "heavy duty" systems out there and it would hold its own. It's not as strong as the "super duty" systems with extra supports built in.

Elfa is a very flexible system if you want that, good for light to medium types of applications. For heavy duty storage (engine/transmission parts, etc) you'll want racks, but for tools and general storage Elfa is plenty strong.

If you want truly want cabinets that will last a lifetime, I highly recommend Cabinets by Hayley.

Mike is terrific and a pleasure to work with. Unbelievable fit and finish along with solid construction (16 AWG).

I'll be posting a more thorough review once everything is installed, but here are a few pics to share. We use our garage for everything from playing ping pong, watching football, sports storage to light duty car tweaking...

All,
Thanks for all the suggestions. I want metal as the garage is not temperature controlled and leaning toward the Gladiator as they also have many other useful accessories such as their tracks and bins.

I appreciate all your suggestions!!:rocker::rocker:

Like these a lot. Whats the price for the tool chests under the bench, just to gauge prices for them?

I went with a combination of Gladiator and Craftsman. I've been very pleased with both. Gladiator has the advantage of coming fully assembled and also seems to have more accessories these days.

Get the home center cabs for general use and a hazmat cab for the chemicals and such.

I really like my "UltraHD" cabinets from Seville Classics. They come in gray with stainless doors, NOT DIAMOND PLATE. I painted the cabinet parts black with epoxy spray paint prior to assembly. Now they look much better.

Their customer service is excellent. Recently I had something fall against one of my cabinets and dent one of the doors. They sent me a new one for free, and didn't even charge me shipping.

If you have a Sams membership, they carry them about 25% off retail. Actually, if you're buying more than one cabinet, the cost of the membership will save you money over paying full price elsewhere.

I recently took delivery of the NewAge Pro-Series in stainless steel. I purchased them from http://www.shopstoragecabinets.com/.

Hopefully I can find some time to finish installation this weekend.

Post some photos of the cabinets dude.
Thanks for the order and plug.

Here's the new Performance Plus Black Diamond Plate Cabinets.

I took a picture this weekend. You'll have to ignore the mess as we are still cleaning up and organizing but it's getting there. The bike doesn't go there, but I had moved it there while cleaning up the other bay.

These are the NewAge Stainless Pro series. Hopefully next year I can find the funds to redo the floor with RaceDeck or the like as you can see the epoxy is peeling off.

Give Mike a call at Hayley. He will work with you. They are priced similar to Baldhead and Vault (mid line).

I am in the process of adding storage to mine.

Planning on lots more, this is just the beginning. Four years in this house now and finally spending some time and money in the garage.

I used the rattle can black epoxy appliance paint which is incredibly durable. Just watch out for the recoat window on the can, it is not an exaggeration.

I went with Gladiator for my whole set up. There are gladiator logos everywhere in the garage. Its kind of funny. Like a tribute to the Whirlpool corporation.

I am pleased with the quality of the cabinets. I got everything real cheap by hunting around. It took almost 4 years but it was fun. Check out the pic. If you want to read more, here is a chronicle of the whole thing:
