I'm looking for cabinet systems in my newly finished garage. See a lot of stuff out there from particle board to metal etc. Lokking for some sturdy stuff that's not too expensive. Anyone have any good cabinetry experiences?

Thanks

Actually, you could make some pretty good cabinets out of melamine. The stuff is pretty strong (when used right), easy to use and pretty tough on the finished sidee. If you seal the bare edges with glued on plastic strips, then parts like door will last quite a while. It's when the melamine (particle board) gets wet and falls apart that people think of how cheap it is.

They make it lots of colors...including the gray you have seen in some garages.....take that gray and edge it with black edging and it looks good. To hang to doors correctly it would help to have the right tool to drill the cups for the Blum hindges....a very strong setup for melamine.

Another important point is to not overload it. You want limit the max width of a shelf to about 2' without middle support. Say you are makeing a 4' wide cabinet....with 12" deep shelves....as long as you support the shelves in the middle as well as the ends....its plenty strong.

Another option...make cabinets out of plywood...then order custom doors. There is a place I use and depending on size, design and wood, price per door ranges from about $40 to $100 per door. I just did about 14 doors for our bathroom and hall linen closet...two of the doors were about 2' x 4'.....all of it was about $800....for the quality, there is no way I can make that myself for that price.

I'm planning on doing something like this:

http://www.rd.com/familyhandyman/content/17772/

Because I have a 10' ceiling but shallow garage. This will leave room around the front of my car when parked and keep the floor space for rolling storage and/or workbench.

There is another great article I have save from Family Handyman about making garage storage from gray melamine with red edging, but I couldn't find it online. I was looking hard at doing that but all I could find readily available was white melamine. I don't really want white cabinets.

Check out IKEA. They have a good selection of storage units and ideas with reasonable prices. Most are for the home but can be adapted to the garage. They have an online site and also a catalog you can send for. I have heard others on here speak of them also.

Yes -- thank you. I'm not much of a wood worker, but even I could try that approach.

Building cabinets?? Too ambitious for me. That garageStore site has no dealers in my state, MD. I see that Sears sells a decent selection of cabinets by companies like Gladiator, Suncast, Snap-On etc., but don't have the tall 2-door cabinets on display. Anyone buy any of those brand-name cabinets and can comment on their quality?

Thanks,

I'm going to do the front wall of my garage similar to that. I have a 9'-6" ceiling so I'll make the cabinets 36" or 42" tall and still have room to put a freezer, tool box, mountain bikes, etc.

I know the article you're talking about. I think I have a copy at home that I could probably scan and post tomorrow.

Ive got 3 craftsman pro metal cabinets. I'm getting closer to being able to hang them. I did take one out of the box and give it the once over. Its a sweet cabinet looks plenty tough. I pciked them over the gladiators because i liked the aerosol can holder they have built into the doors.

I have had good luck with the Seville cabinets that Sam's club sells. I have seen the large two door cabinets ( with wheels ) and the 4 drawer cabinet with wheels both have stainless steel fronts on them. I purchased two of the 4 drawer cabinets to use as a workbench base. Although they had to be assembled I was very impressed with the quality considering the price.

Part of the answer depends on the depth of cabinet you want, over head or under counter. I use the harbor freight 3 door cabinets (see the FRP thread for a picture) for overhead; they are just the right size to store gallon cans/jugs and smaller, and if you find them on sale, relatively cheap.

I found these at Harbor Freight: about $60 ea. I'm complimenting them with pegboard and the metal strip + bracket type shelving. At first I wasn't sure about the cabinets but once I got them up I'm very happy. I want to buy some more.

I used the pallet racking system from Sams Club. 6 feet long 4 shelves high and then put my tool box under the bottom shelf. The Pallet racking is priced under $200
