Garage Cabinets, what have you used

Looking to make the garage feel more like a room in the house. I have had the garage cabinet folks come out, but they haven't impressed me. It was a take it or leave it design.

I had a cabinet guy come out, wanted 9K for the cabinets.

Like the look of Slide LoK, but not sure the quality.

What other options are there?

I am not handy when it comes to tools, so need a full service shop.

Stay away from the Slide Lock stuff, it is absolute **** in my opinion. I saw a display just the other day at a home show and man was it bad, I wouldn't even put this in a laundry room let alone a garage. The guy went on and on about how good their construction was, dovetail this and plywood that... crapola.

Other cabinets I looked at were from Premier Garage, definetly better than Slide Lock but again its a here's what we have take it or leave it selection. They would also have you believe that their one inch thick shelves are the end all be all of cabinetry, I asked some questions about their construction and each time it came back to "... and we have 1" thick..."

We have specialty garage companies around here that work with both module sizes as well as custom built units and their prices are very reasonable. I would imagine that there has to be the equivalent near you. Maybe its just me but I always prefer to support smaller local business over chains, or box stores.

One thing I did, was make all mine from 1/2" and 3/4" melamine(same material pre cut shelves are made from). If your into woodworking as well as cars, you buy it in 4X8 foot sheets, assemble the frame-work out of 1X2's, 2X4's or 2X6, depending on need. Cut the melamine into inside shelves, make your doors and facia and add hinges inside.All edges can be covered with iron on melamine edge tape.My top was 1" fir plywood, and I had a local hyvac company bend all my sheetmetal tops as needed for a perfect fit. I like the metal tops, as they won't stain, wipe off easy, won't absorb....can solder on them etc. You build them to fit exactly as you need. Sorry I don't have any pics from my last shop I built, but looks great. My new shop addition (3rd bay/workshop) will get the same this spring.

check you local "Craigslist.org" or other Classifieds. My cabinets were "take-outs' from an executive office lunch area. They were a bargain and were top quality!

These companies are called "tenant improvement" they tear out old offices and install whatever the new people want. some of the stuff they take out is great, and they just toss it in the dumpster!!!

I found these on Craiglist, would make a nice wall in the garage, and maybe, I could get him to make the others I need.

Personally I'm going to get 3 or 4 double door standard white cabinets to go with my remodeling project. I have a craftsman workbench so I can take it when I move on to bigger and better things. I'd hate to invest all that money in a countertop and cabinets and have it mostly stuck with the house.

I am very pleased with these. They can hold >over 300 lbs each. and come in an almost unlimited variety of sizes (height, depth, and width) making a custom installation for any need. They can be mounted OFF THE FLOOR which is appealing to me. Best of all, the price designed, shipped, and installed by my regional distributor was less than anything I found at the big box stores!
